Title: Gateway...
Post by: wolf44 on June 24, 2007, 09:16:53 PM
Well, it was fun...between the humidity  and the on and off rain both days, it wasn't too bad.  Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative at Road America.

I think it was a wrist and several bumps and bruises.

Great weekend and the rain races were pretty fun as we got them mostly in between the heavy stuff.

Great Riding to everyone.

Heres a vid I shot from practice on Saturday.  I thought the music fit.  My camera stopped working during the LW SB race in the rain.  Ben and I had a pretty good race going until I about tucked the front in 6.  I was pissed when I got back to the pits and my camera was off...I ran out of batteries :banghead:

Becka, best wishes on a speedy recovery!

Hopefully everybody else made it home unscathed.  I had a blast at my reunion, but still missed the racing until I saw Dans video.  That is way too many walls for me.

Anthony, who all showed up and how did you finish?

Dan, sounds like you had fun chasing Ben.

SD had a great race in UNLGP... got caught up with a lapper and allowed neudleman to close the gap enough to throttle past him on the straight.

lotsa rain

Scott Meyers had a great weekend!  3, 1sts and a 2nd in MW stuff and F40.  Locals did well in general.  jenk's fell down in the rain at the exit of 4... bike hit tires, tore up his front end pretty good.

a few falls, nothing to serious.

I had an absolute blast on Jasa's SV at the friday track day... man those things are fun!

I had a lot of fun at Gateway. :)

Sorry to see Becca's crash and resulting injuries though.

It was wild watching all the bikes go down once it started raining.  I think it was the 2nd race when that happened.

I was all ready to go out on DOT's in the pouring rain then they called it a wet race and moved the lunch hour up.  So, I switched over to rains.

First time I've ever been on rain tires.  Got a decent start, but the leaders pulled away.  I took Tom Mason's advice and started out at 50% and worked my way up... by the end of the race, I was catching some guys, but I had no idea they were 2nd and 1st place.  I think I passed for 1st place on the next to last lap.

Dry was a different story!  Still had a blast though!

Gateway is not a track that I care to race. I was there cuz I had to drive the rig down so Chris could race and stay in the points lead for Light Weight GP. I ended up running GTU and finished 6th. I had a lot of fun running that race too. Chirs on the other hand had a great race. Like always the bike bogged on the start. They left LWGP a one wave start, which I think was stupid. So Chirs was dead last going into turn one behind all the amatuers too. He was running 3 seconds faster then everyone else in the class. So from dead last he managed to pass all the amatuers and finish 2nd right on Paul James butt.

Becca broke her forearm in two places, while she was in second.  The East-St Louis-Hospital hooked her up special, with a 1970's era plaster cast   :err:

I crashed out of GTO passing Nudleman for the lead (on the outside of 7) with 1 lap to go.  My pretty yellow bike is now just pretty ugly.
Big Props to Mark Nudleman, he supplied me with his spare handlebars, trying to help me get my bike back out there :thumb:

In UNSB, Super Dave jumped off his bike on the grid at the 4 board, and danced an Irish Jig  :lmao: :wtf: :lmao: .... I swear  :ahhh:

i had a ball. gateway wasn't nearly as rough as i thought it would be. the right hand turns played a number on the ankle. by sunday it had swelled so much i thought i was going to bust the zipper on the boot. but the track was pretty cool.
4 people passed me in the first race after the rain started falling and each of them fell in the next turn. so i backed way off and finished 12th but on 2 wheels. got the rain tires on and ended up with a 6th and a 4th in the next to ss races.

defintaley an interesting weekend...  I posted a video of the MWSS race in the rain..  Jenkins was flying until he high-sided.  I wish I could've been a little closer, the camera didn't pick up how cool of a crash it was (Hey if your gonna crash, it should be on video!!)... If the F#@kin walls weren't so close, he would've saved it...

I tried to get the hooters girl on camera, but she was scared... sorry for the cheesy intro... When I'm old and poor I want to be able to see why!!

Nice meeting and racing with you Kurt.

Classic trying to pick up the Hooters chick while waiting to go out on the track!  :lmao:

A friend of the guy I was pitting with has a pretty good shot of Jenkins hanging off the side of the bike before he decided he didn't want to take that ride.  I'll see if I can get it for you to pass along to him.

There was also a heck of a save by a dude on a black bike (GSXR I think) coming out of the larger chicane (turn 4 I guess).  Bike went about 30 degrees left, then about 45 right and spit him up out of his seat pretty well.  He hung on and saved it.  I think he had an SK sticker on it.  Heck of a job to save it though!

Sorry Paul!

Ouch! Thanks Rick. Yes, it's supposed to be oil-in-the-swingarm, not oil-on-the-swingarm! Thankfully, it was a minor deal and didn't cause anyone else a problem.

Becca, great riding and glad you're mostly OK. Hope to see you out there again soon.

Anthony, you rocked in the rain! Nice job.

Chris, I guess I'm lucky they shortened the LWGP race from 12 laps to 8! I was pretty damn impressed with how quickly you got up to speed on a track you'd never seen before. All the best to you in chasing down Mr. Key again this season.

Thanks PJ, had a blast chasing you and trying not to slide myself silly in the rain.  Don't know where Chris hides the Nitrous button on the bike but he went by me on the straight and into Turn 1 like I was on a Model A to take 2nd in the GTL.  Wicked Fast!!!!  It was fun watching him hunt you down, from my position I couldn't tell who made the finish line first but it sure seemed like a race.

If my memory is correct he was running Middleweight times.  WOW.

yeah im alright. I was way out front and I made a bit of a mistake and made too agressive of a pass on a lapper (one of youre friends i believe, the older gentleman with cafe racer, greg?) I didnt want to stuff him into T1 (very dangerous) so i went around the outside and I kinda spooked him when he changed his line a little and he tapped my elbow, at that point I think he stood it up/bailed out. I pretty much had it saved but then he got sucked into my wheel and i could no longer turn the bike torwards the concrete run off and almost had it stopped when i tucked the front in the grass. Stupid mistake that has me working my ass of to get the bike ready for a very important race for me with WERA at Road Atlanta this weekend (i leave wednesday). I came back and won my next two races but it still sucked.

And to Greg (if thats your name) sorry if our little incident messed up your weekend. if you wouldnt mind, shoot me a pm id like to talk to you a little bit.

Hi Ben,

I didn't get spooked, I've been doing this long enough that I'm quite comfortable with close racing and don't worry too much about contact.  I found out a long time ago that if you stay relaxed that the bikes can show remarkable stability in contact situations (providing that you don't catch a brake lever!).  When you came by on the outside you or your bike snagged something on my bike which stood it up and pulled it into you.  My body then got tangled up in your rear wheel.

I am disappointed that you are attributing our crash to me getting spooked.  Racing a 20 year old single in a lightweight class I know that I'm going to be passed so it's no surprise when it happens.  I was focused on setting up to pass the SV in front of me and didn't even know that you were there until the bike got pulled upright.

I'd be happy to talk with you.  Give me a call at 816-225-8300.

There's a few of us that fit that description...

My weekend was ok, had 3rd wrapped up in GTU until I blew T1 ...twice. Got 6th in GP but they had me last and pretty much sat out the rain races. Then went to HPT to teach with Dave. Gateway to HPT, man, what a difference!

Heh.... After our little chat, I also blew turn 1!  I wasn't sure where the hell to go, so for good measure, I did a 360 coming out of NASCAR 2!

Nice running with you again John and it was cool to see your Mom out there.

I attribute our crash to me making a mistake and passing a slow rider to closely. However, I felt that as soon as we touched you decided you were going to crash instead of just turning the bike into the corner in wich case we both would have made it. Though it sounds like maybe some other stuff happened that got you pulled down under me and caught up on my bike. So again im sorry and ill be sure to go up the inside of you next time.

You might be best to just let this one drop and chalk it up to experience and not leave so little room for anyones error next time.  The way you word your replies is just digging yourself a deeper hole.

Ben I think your crash is more likey related to you trying to pass on the outside of 1.  The nature of the turn forces everything wide.   Then contact, and you know the rest.  I'd never try to go outside in 1... I go inside all day long if I have a wheel.

Also if your WAY out in front why not wait for T2... with your motor a 1 sec delay would have net you a clean pass and put a lapper in between you and whoever through the infield.

I only pass on the outside of 1, never on the inside.  I think it's much safer.  Getting pinched into the inner-wall in 1 worries me.
(In fact, I never pass on the inside in any corner.  Too worried about someone turning it in, in front of me, early.  Happened once and put me in the hospital, now I'm paranoid about it happening again)
Title: Re: Gateway...

key phrase... if I have a wheel.

everything moves away from the wall at speed.  you go outside and the the guy changes his line, runs it wide or even worse... decides he cant make the turn and takes Nascar T1... where's that put you?  In the hospital.

If I have a wheel I know I can hold my line in 1...at the speeds we carry into one its hard to think someone could dive bomb you there... 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8... yeah I can see your hesitation, but again, if you have a wheel its no problem.

besides, you just wait till the straight and twist your wrist to pass...

Ok then.....

I used to think Ben should have went expert this year, but I've changed my opinion on that.  To be an expert, you should be able to go fast with out crashing  :spank:

Becka, can we get an update on your condition?  How soon will you be back?

Me thinks someone isn't as concerned about Becca's welfare as he is in finding out how many events he can rack up points while she's out.

But that is just mean of me to think that :kicknuts:

I'm sure that isn't true

And no, I don't work for CSI.
