Title: Topeka or Bust!!!
Post by: SV88 on April 09, 2007, 03:34:20 PM
Ok I've finally made up my mind to go to Topeka - does anyone know of some good track video (taken from a competent rider) for that track?  Also what is appropriate gearing for a 1st gen. SV?

from John "call me competent" Dueser.  Not race pace, but a few laps right after the repave.

No I LOVE topeka...I just can't push myself at a trackday...

1. You can never wreck on the warm up lap
2. You can never wreck on the cool down lap
3. You can never wreck at a track day

No Checkered, I am not going at 100%...

Ok Topeka is a twin sprints right?
If so why is there only one ccs thunderbike race? or did I just not see it
Title: Re: Topeka or Bust!!!
Post by: Super Dave on April 10, 2007, 06:05:59 PM
It is a twin sprint.  I don't have the schedule in front of me so I can't answer.  Could just be an administrative error.

Thanks SD. :thumb:
It also only shows one f40 race for the weekend.

I'd say contact CCS.  Might just be a typo on their part.  Big event, they can use the revenue for the year, and riders will want points.

I have the schedule in frong of me and it shows 2 CCS thunderbike races.  They are race #2 on Friday and Race #12 on Saturday.  ASRA Thunderbike is race #10 on Sunday.

I suspect that you are looking at the schedule wrong.

I know I didn't look at Friday when I first checked the schedule.

Can't wait!

Title: Re: Topeka or Bust!!! What Gearing for 1st gen SV?
Post by: SV88 on April 24, 2007, 01:43:14 PM
Hello All:  Still trying to find a decent answer on the gearing issue - right now I'm at 15-45.  Looks like there is a long straight but lots of technical sections...

tks
Title: Re: Topeka or Bust!!!
Post by: Jack_Brock on April 24, 2007, 02:12:20 PM
15-45 works ok and gives you enough so you don't run out of gear, but I don't think it is the best overall.  Try 1 or 2 less on the rear depending on the wind.
Title: Re: Topeka or Bust!!!
Post by: funsizeracing on April 24, 2007, 03:53:15 PM
I think I ran a 15-48 there last year.
Title: Re: Topeka or Bust!!!
Post by: tstruyk on April 24, 2007, 03:59:14 PM
yeah but you weigh 9 pounds (with gear) and can stand on your pegs and not be in the wind...
Title: Re: Topeka or Bust!!!
Post by: SV88 on April 24, 2007, 04:43:02 PM
So the conscensus is to go down in gearing meaning more top speed right?  But if I'm not running out of gear at 15-45, I'd be inclined to increase torque by going 14-46 Or higher until I rev out at the end of the straight, not the other way.
Title: Re: Topeka or Bust!!!
Post by: Super Dave on April 24, 2007, 05:04:44 PM
I gear for corners and focus on not running out of gear.  It's only for a moment that you're at top speed, but there are more than ten turns at Topeka.  You need to drive out of those.  That's where your focus should be.  Sometimes tall gearing works better.  I have a set up for my R6 where I only run second, third, and fourth at Blackhawk as an example.

And the right answer is that 15-45 does NOT work.  I found myself looking for that 7th gear while getting close to the kink.  Really liked the track but I've got a ways to go to figure it all out.  My practice time was essentially eliminated by a leaking outer then inner/water pump leak  (remember the red smoking SV88).  Luckily had some help from Scott Shaffer which completely solved the problem.

Found out that my bike was down on Hp.  If I was riding well, I'd generally catch people approaching or in corners but would get seriously pulled on the straights.  A dyno run b4 the first practice Sunday morning indicated around 66 hp and over 8% CO2 - very rich probably 2 main jet sizes.  To my consternation, found out that very few people are still running 1st gen SV's - could not find two #148 Mikuni jets to save my life.

Should be able to figure all of this out before the racer U May 7th and the next BHF race...

Cheers!!

Steve-It was great to meet you and George!  and I definately felt for you after hearing that you did far more wrenching than racing this weekend.  I'm not sure if we will end up at another race together, but if we do and you need a hand wrenching-just ask.  If I can't help, I'll find someone who can.

I started the weekend with 16-46 and ran a 1:56 in the second session and stayed with that for Saturday.  On Sunday, I used 15-46 and got 3 laps at 1:55 on worn tires during my second race which was LWSB, and that leads me to believe the later is closer to optimal gearing.  I was definately using all of 6th on the front straight on Sunday!

Did you use the dyno that the ASRA was using?  If so, 66 is pretty good.  I got 62.4, and Becka(pink, #410) got 64.4.

Jack - Likewise it was good meeting you.  Wrenching thru mechanicals builds character however my goal is to first have a reliable machine so that I can concentrate on racing.  I added 15% to the Factory dyno (ASRA) number of 57 and you should do the same so you were probably in the neighboorhood of 75 Hp.  I'm going to concentrate on getting the jetting right b4 having the motor freshened up after BHF (will not do MAM so I'll have 3-4 weeks).  Will work on my R6 prepping it for sale.

Steve.

Yeah, that is a Factory Pro eddy current dyno, and it's numbers aren't really relevant to Dynojet numbers.  I'd say Jack is pretty much spot on.  I've heard 13% to 15% difference.

WOW 1:55- 1:56 That is smoking fast! I was pretty happy with high 2:02 in my last race, but it wasn't enough for the AM win. Hopfully I'll have some more next time now that I know the track a bit.

the best i could get was 2:00 flat. and that was with pushing the front in sliding the rear in several turns. i have no clue how some of those guys are knocking out 1:40 somethings.

Maybe your tires were shot or something..??  I was hovering 1:50s all weekend and was barely spinning the rear and the front was rock solid even after 5 sprints on the same tire..

Consistent 52's with the SV.  Forks are stock, and they were limiting.  It's gonna be a cool bike.

I think laptimes are available from Ft Worth if you e-mail, but the ASRA qualifying times are posted in the Results area and tell the tale!
