Title: Gearing for Carolina Motorsports Park
Post by: rogers1323 on March 28, 2007, 06:13:02 PM
Since no one else has asked, I will.  Does anyone have gearing suggestions for CMP on a '04 GSXR 600?  I'm running 15-45 at VIR North, and ran 16-46 at Daytona and both seemed to be about right.  I'm pretty sure it's not as high speed as Daytona, but I'm not sure how it compares to VIR.  Any help would be appreciated.

I run a sv there for reference and have to drop a tooth on the front coming from VIR. 16-46 at vir to 15-47 at cmp... It's not a fast track as far as top speeds go...

I thought it was going to be tighter, but I'm not sure if I expected that much.  I'm already down 1 in the front from stock at VIR.  Maybe I should go up a couple in the rear and end up about 15-47?  Maybe someone on a 600 can weigh in on this?  Thanks guys.

I would go up one in the rear from your VIR North set-up.

Thanks Steve.  Are you going to be making the trip or are you out of commission at the moment?  I thought I heard a little rumor about a crash.

This is Joel from Wilmington BTW.

I will not be at CMP. The rumors are correct. Broken right collarbone. Bummer. I will be at Jennings in May though.

I asked a few weeks ago and my post went unanswered

Goto the r6messagenet and ask there. Look for BigDeezul I think his name is on that board and ask him. He is pretty good with r6 stuff.

I'm sure there are those who don't answer these questions because they feel that their gearing choices give them an advantage or edge.  But the main reason(s) for not answering is that gearing varies significantly from rider to rider as well as from bike to bike.

With the bike it varies from brand to brand because of the differences in the transmission gearing and between individual bikes due to different tire and wheel sizes and to a much, much smaller degree tire types and compound choices.  Nowhere in this thread do I see anyone asking rogers1323 what his tire size is before recommending a gearing.  Your recommendation could be as much as 2 teeth off just depending on any differences between his/your tire sizes.

The variations from rider to rider have to do with corner speed, race lines and throttle control.  Faster riders get there mostly by having higher corners speeds and a combination of race line and throttle control that conserves or improves their momentum and produces better drives out of the turns.  If a lesser rider tries to use the same gearing it will likely produce slower lap times for them.

In the end what rogers1323 uses for Daytona, I might use at CMP and I might be -5 from rogers at Daytona and have 3-5 second faster lap times.  So how will it benefit rogers1323 to know my gearing choice?

For most riders the following method will work best:   look at the size and layout of the new track.  Make a chart showing stock gearing at the top and then starting with a track you know well in mind, mark for each new track your best guess as to whether your rear sprocket should go up or down and by how much.  How much should you guess?  Well rarely will 1 tooth make a noticeable difference during testing for most folks.  I recommend starting with a 2-3 tooth change on the rear first (same as going up or down 1 in the front) and then adjust it either up or down by 1 to 2 teeth until you get it right.  It's right when you're turning your fastet lap times.  And when do you do this testing?  What do you think track days and the practice days before race weekends are for?

When you find your optimum gearing, update your chart so the next time you go there you'll have a starting point.  But note, it's only a starting point.  Because if the next time you visit a track is 6 months to a year later then you should have improved on all of those things in paragraph 3 above and so now you need to do some more testing....  ;)

Me too. I just found out that my surgery isn't until April 26th for my collarbone so it seems half the season is shot already. :( I guess I won't be at Jennings May 5-6 but I WILL be at RRR June 9-10. I will see you and the gang there Paul!
