Title: I like to try to engage them in conversation...
Post by: Super Dave on February 26, 2007, 08:54:29 AM
There's a no call list and all for telemarketers, but, anymore, I like to talk to them.

I mean, they are trying to make money, and I'm trying to relax.  If they are going to call me while I'm watching Desperate Housewives, hey, I'm gonna really work to keep them on the phone with me for my personal entertainment.  One of the easiest ways to do that is to respond to everything they ask you with a question.

"Isn't that a great offer?"
"Well, I don't know.  What would you do?"

Years ago, my mom had cancer, and when a telemarketer would call, she's just pipe up and say, "I have cancer."  That usually stopped them in their tracks.

"You have been chosen to receive a special gift!"
"I have cancer."

My dad had a new swing on it.  His line was, "I'm just an old widower waiting to die."

(Seems like my family has had a morbid sense of humor...)

Anyway, taking it to a new level...

Have a great Monday!

back in college I worked for a carpet cleaning place.  So, when the telemarketers would call I'd politely tell them I wasn't interested but then try to sell them our monthly deal on carpet cleaning.

LOL!

I worked for a small business, and we would ge regular calls from companies wanting to talk to the owner.  I developed a name, Jack, for the fictional owner.  Eventually, Jack took on a life of his own.  "May I speak to the owner?"  "Jack's the owner, he's not here right now."  "Will he be in later?"  "No he's vacationing in Aruba right now.  Won't be back for about three weeks."

All you have to do is tell them that you don't own/believe in telephones and hang up.  Ive had a couple who have called back.

Someone is paying these people.  So, to make it hurt, take their time, and their company time.

I like to try to keep them on the phone for five to ten minutes.  I might start screaming for no reason about tooth decay or something along that line.  Make loud noises that makes them stop talking for a minute.

Talk to yourself and respond to yourself.
