Title: How much weight do I gotta lose.... ???
Post by: Speedballer347 on December 28, 2006, 02:17:50 PM
I am swollen-with-toxins at 215.
I should be 190.
Thats an extra 25 pounds.

I could try and lose the 25lbs of lard to be healthier, look & feel better, live longer, blah blah blah. Whatever  :sleeping2:

What kind of difference is there in accellerating (06 1K) and more importantly, lean-angle traction.  I know lighter is better for leaning er over, but is 25 lbs even real-world noticable.

Ill be back to check this post after I get something to eat at the feed bag and trough

Do you agree that mental health is as big a piece as anything (if not bigger than others) in racing?

If so, do something about your weight...  You mention "Look better, feel better" in your post.  If you're feeling better about yourself, you're going to perform better on the track...

If you feel like a tubby lardass, you're gonna perform like one.

I like my lard, it keeps me warm at night.

Or, look at it from this perspective:  More lard = more insulation during the winter months = able to lower the thermostat = lower utility payments = more $ for tires/entry fees/etc when racing season rolls around!

ABSOLUTELY,
Thats why I was going to saw my head off to shed the 25 pounds  :thumb:

Yeah, I need to (and will) get in shape again, just need something to motivate.  Figured lean angles like Becca's would be nice.
I need to cut my arms and legs off though to get that light....then I couldn't hold the handlebars no mo :wah:

Acceleration I don't know. I would say every little bit would help. But the lighter you are the better the bike will handle. I'm 30 pounds heavier now than when I first started riding on the track. But then I was 159 and at 6'1", that wasn't too healthy looking. Nothing but hip bones and ribs. But I can tell a big difference from how the bike handled then to how it handles now. Still have the bike with the same set up. But I've changed my diet and have been working out as of late and have dropped 5 pounds thus far.
The biggest thing though is how much better you would be able to perform. You may not think the 25 pounds weighs you down too much. But go to walmart and grab a 25 pound bad of dog food and carry it around the store while you shop. It'll wear your ass out. So think how you would do 25 pounds lighter. If you tired out faster because you are slinging an extra 25 pounds from side to side, your head wont be as clear, you wont focus as well, and you are more likely to make mistakes.
Mistakes suck at 100+ mph. That's my two cents anyway.

And you'd have to have your leathers altered. The Headless Roadracer. Johnny Depp can star in the Blockbuster movie version.

   I think the standard is-------- every+- 7 lbs. = +-1 bhp.

Less weight is better, regardless :)

Personally, I like Kim's idea :thumb:

You could look at the extra lard as actually being additional safety gear.  You know how they put bubble wrap around parts that get shipped to you??  Think of the extra fat being like bubble wrap for your bones! :kicknuts:

Or in your case, for your brain!! :lmao:

I rode a SV650 last year@ 245#'s. The year before I was on a 600. When I made the switch to the SV I had a hard time adjusting to the new style of ridin it. I felt @ 245#'s I was giving away a significant advantage to  lighter and equally skilled riders. I heard an equation once that for every ____#'s of weight it's like adding a "h.p." I can't remeber what that # was, maybe something like for every 10#'s it's a pony???
Anyway, I told my fatass that this year would REALLY be the year that I took off the weight. Well, to date I am weighing in at 219#'s and it's still dropping. My height is 5'10". I plan on getting down to about 190-200# range. So far I can tell you that the almost 25#'s that I have lost has made a HUGE difference in almost EVERYTHING I do. Stamina, energy level, metabolism, mental state, and a "good feeling overall". One thing I had a problem with in racing has been my "limberness". It was hard for me to really move around on the bike and even get into that tight "racer tuck" on the straights. (Part of that problem was my beer belly too.)
I know that when my weight gets down to my goal I will feel incredible.
I am totally stoked and ready for next season!! So my say so on the matter is.....YES, loose the weight and you'll feel great!!!

Happy New Year to all and best wishes for a great 07!!

at the end of summer i was 230, i started working out and got below 220 for the first time in about two years... it felt so good, then i had to go work out of town for a couple weeks and when i came back i got lazy and now with the holidays i am back at 230 +/-  but at the beginning of this week i went grocery shopping and started workout hardcore again

if you want to just drop weight and work on stamina do aerobic exercise, your heart will thank you

Okay take the weight of the bike ~400 add your weight 215 so take 615 / by what 160hp for a 1k? so 3.84 pounds per hp lose 25 pounds 3.693#/hp

For a lower hp bike the weight changes are more significant
Like a SV ~360 +215= 575 / 70 hp =8.21#/hp  lose 25 7.86#/hp

I dont know about your local areas, but around here, the High School gym's open up on Wednesday and Sunday nights from 7pm to 9pm for what is affectionally known around here as 'Old Man Ball'.   A bunch of guys (and girls) over 18 get together for a couple hours of half-court basketball.  It's a great, free, 'fun' way to get some expercise, get your heart rate up for an extended period, and to hang out with some great people.   If they offer open gyms in your local area, I'd recommend attending once just to check it out.  It's been allot more fun for me than going to the gym or running around the square by myself.

+1, people tend to use 7 lbs per horse power as a constant. But in reality, the lighter/lower hp the total package the larger the difference a few pounds make.

ohh and Baller, just think of how cool you 1000 would be if it weighed a solid 25lbs less, then think of how much it would cost you vs. riding your bicycle and lifting a few weights

In June '05 I did my 1st trackday at 167#'s.  The most excercise I was used to getting was remodeling a house.  I could bench press maybe 135 at that time.  I barely finished the last session of the trackday I was so exhausted.  I knew I wanted to race, and if I'm gonna race I want to be competitive, so it was time to get my ass to work.  By July '06 I could run 4 miles in under 30 minutes, bench press 200#'s and my weight was down to 147#'s.  Granted, 167 is not exactly heavy for 5'10", but every little bit helps especially on a stock motor 1st gen. SV.
I have no doubt that the best thing a racer could do for themselves is to be in the best physical condition they can.  Thats different for each of us, but I was an athlete in high school and know what a difference it makes.
Good luck everybody, and remember- the more you stay focused this winter- the better off you will be at Topeka in April!!!!!!

I have never been big but - this season I want to be at 100%....I don't want to leave anything to chance or say "Well if I did this" Or "I could have tried harder" - basically I don't want to have any excuses..... So I have been busting my ass in the gym - at home - on the Stationary bike- proper dieting - proper sleep.... All of this is done under the supervision of a trainer - So I don't get too out of control.... But I am in the best shape of my life and I have also lost 10 pounds since last season(I'm down to 155 & I'm 5'11").......  So here's to everyone and hoping that it all pays off next season.... Cheers

Thats another great point Scotty - proper eating is VERY important also.  I didnt achieve my results without alot of discipline about the type of fuel I put in.  I might drink soda 1 time a week at the most.  Low sugar, low carb and HIGH PROTEIN will take you a long way.
What are your racing plans for next season Scotty?  Still lookin' at that ride with "Safety First"?  How about the awards banquet?

started my diet/excercise/nonsmoking/lessdrinking regiment this week... well the smokin was a few 3 weeks ago...

low fat, high protien diet, mind the carbs (not starve, just limit) minimum of 30 mins of Cardio 5 days a week these first 2 weeks, will go to 15 min cardio (tread/eliptical) and 45 min circuit training once I get my lungs back... 4 days a week on that.

I think the big kicker will be cutting out the 15 or so drinks a weekend I typically have... I might have the occasional drink in the evening (1 glass of red wine works like ambien when I cant get to sleep).  But I go out with the wife and friends almost every friday and saturday night... and lets just say I typically dont drive home   That should save me a few hundered a month as well (thats like free racin money and no hangovers!!!) I cant lose!

Steady 195 by the end of the year is the goal...

Baller, I got a free Dick Enrico (look up 2nd wind fitness equipment) bobble head doll for you if you lose 25
Struyk-let me know if you need any help for your programming or any periodization help to get you set up for the season
p.s. carbs aren't bad, just try to take in all whole grains for your carbs and you'll be fine, not enough and you're body will go into ketosis...i don't think you want kidney stones  :kicknuts:  not to mention that you're body will be working against yourself during your workouts if you don't have enough carbs

Looks like your headed in the right direction!

You may want to consider abstaining from sex too.

Studies have shown that it's a sure fire way to increase your ability to focus and improve your reaction time.

Like you said, your don't want to leave anything to chance!!  :thumb:

Well, first let me say that some things in life are just worth the consequences.
That being said- I was a cross-sountry runner in high school.  I wasnt an all-star, but some other guys at my school were.  They were so hooked on winning that they DID GIVE UP SEX for the entire season.  They were also top 10 finishers at the state championships.
Not that any of us would have had something that steady going anyway........But I am proud to say that I told them they were crazy and that I did indulge when I got the chance   For what its worth- I think they were right and that it did help them, more from a "save your effort" standpoint than anything to do with mental concentration.

I'm really sorry that a few of you didn't see thru it.

Maybe it was the ones who know me (and my sense of humor) who were able to take it as it was intended.

I do know that if you shave all the hair off your body for swimming you'll go faster!!!  Wonder if that would work for racing motorcycles???  Maybe only if you were only wearing a swimsuit!!

Bro,

I have a training and conditioning program that I do that is tailor made for racers.  I work with all kinds of athletes; rugby, cross country skiers, runners, cyclists, etc and currently have training clients in the AMA that you would recognize.  I also do follow-up coaching as the year goes along and periodize it for best benefit.

Drop me an email offline if you are interested in dropping the lbs and being ready to rock when the lights go from red to green.
