The new Sport Rider mag has a shootout between the BMW R1200s and the SV 1000. Interesting since in CCS it races against the SV 650 but in performance it stacks up pretty evenly with the SV 1000. Even the new Moto-ST series is running ti in the same class with the SV 1000. The BMW makes 112 HP and weighs 484 lbs wet , the SV 1000 makes 111 hp and weighs 479 lbs wet, and the SV 650 makes 73 hp and weighs 429 lbs wet. Sounds like the BMW is the way to go for a big advantage in the lightweight classes, for the wealthy racer. MSRP prices BMW $14,725, SV 1000 $8599, and SV 650 $6499. And no contingency from BMW.
Sport rider also say the BMW handles better, has better brakes and suspension than the SV1000. On top of the is was a BMW that WON the OVERALL at Daytona Moto-ST. Oh and the SV1000 is a heavyweight and the BMW is a lightweight.
and the 484lbs was with the ABS brakes.
Since I can't sell it I want to run my SV1000 in lightweight next year.
If you just looked at numbers, the buell xb's should be killing all the SV's too.. they're rated at 103hp..
You can't always compare two things just based on a spec sheet.. Wasn't there a huge thread on the BMW earlier this year too?
Buells do not make 103 hp at the rear wheel stock, they make around 83 hp. Even the Duc 1000 makes around 93, these numbers all according to the same mag testing on the same dyno. The numbers I posted are not manufacture rated numbers but actual numbers. That is how class structures are determined, by putting bikes of similar performance in the same class. Sure some bikes will be better than others, but 112 hp versus 73 hp is not similar.

you gotta be joking right? The rules for next year need to be revisited. The BMW should be nothing more than a supertwin and a Thunderbike. The Buells and Ducati 1000SS, allowed in LWSB under all SS rules. You could clearly see the HP advantage of the BMW at Daytona..it should speak for itself. Not one SV rider had a shot in LWSS race. That thing was gone on the banking. I think times were 2:02's vs 2:10.6 put down by Bob Michael and I was at a 2:11, both of us on SS SV650's. and this has nothing to do with Nate, this is about a bike being in a class that it doesnt belong
So are the BMW and Ducati legal for LWSS?
Looking at the rule book, it would appear so. To me, it seems lightweight bikes should be less expensive and less powerful than the middleweight bikes. The BMW and Ducati are both more money than the middleweight bikes, and are only slightly off in terms of performance, so I'm not sure what the rationale is for them being lightweight bikes. I currently have an SV, and recently moved to the expert class. I would like to run some of the larger races, but if I have to buy a high dollar bike to be competitive at a national level in LW, I'll probably just get a MW bike. LW has a lot of potential, so hopefully CCS makes some adjustements.
