Hey Ed,

good to see that your ok, not sure but I think he was the dude from CA, his last name was Lester(sp?).
If it was, I saw him in the paddock on Sun and he seemed ok.

The rider was back at the track helping Ben Thompson (Ex #907) on Sunday.

He had some interesting comments about the durability (or lack of!) of his leathers in the incident.  He appeared to have received some nasty road rash on both elbows and said the suit also came apart at the stitching across his lower back where he also got scraped up pretty bad.

I won't mention the brand here, but he is convinced this brand has a frequent habit of coming apart in a crash.  This is based on a number of incidents he had first hand knowledge of.  No idea why he continued to wear the suit if he felt it was inadequate.  He said he is planning to contact Road Racing World related to this and to assist with further investigation.

See you there.

IMO, there should be some vehicle for disseminating info re: kit problems, without putting oneself in danger of legal liability. In matters of safety, we have to watch each others backs (no pun). On the other hand, no one wants a situation like what happened to Simpson Safety Equipment over Dale Ernhardt's death.

Without passing any judgement, reporting what equipment a racer was wearing, and the injuries sustained. That would allow people to reach their own conclusions based upon something more relevant than a manufacturer's advertising, or rumors.

Glad he is OK!

Post up the brand of leathers-its a matter of safety and I know I would want to know if I was thinking about Brand X of leathers if guys were having them blow open...

With the exception of helmets, your best source for deciding on equipment is the people who repair it. Other racers do not necessarily know what to look for when it comes to manufacturing leathers, boots, or gloves.

Anyone who would like info on a planned purchase of leathers or gloves can always feel free to email or call me for my suggestions. I've written this stuff up in the forum before, but as things change every year, past info is not necessarily good from season to season. I don't charge anything to help racers out, I just want to see you guys get the best value for the dollar.

the thing with 'post up the brand and the injuries' is that it doesn't take much into consideration.  The type of crash, speed, age of suit, conditions of pavement, any one of a million other factors that can make the BEST manufacturer look like hell, and the worst look like gold.

"good" is not always the most expensive, and the cheapest are not always the 'worst'.

If this suit failed due to something inherent in the manufacture, I'd bet a large sum of money, it would be on Alexa's 'not really recommended' list.  I don't believe there are too many suits on the market that she hasn't seen or repaired.  Additionally, she stands really nothing to gain by what you purchase (well, unless you buy garbage that needs constant repair, but she's not that way).

Thanks for the props, but I do have something to gain as of 2007, when we will officially be building a limited number of SLW leathers. The current limit is 20, and there about 4 or 5 slots left on the short list.

I can't in good faith reveal the brand name here on the forum.  I shared it with Alexa due to the nature of her business, her experience in dealing with most every brand out there and the professional standards she maintains.

As was noted here already, there are too many variables that I have no first hand knowledge of.  (exact crash details, age of the leathers, etc.)  I do know that the leathers would have had to be passed through Tech. (Maybe by me, I don't recall exactly).

This brings up a good point.  I know it's a headache for you guys (and Becca) to bring all of your gear with you to go thru Tech.  What if we didn't require that?  Most of you wouldn't think of using defective equipment.  Unfortunately, there are a few out there who go with the cheapest stuff they can find and in some cases keep using stuff long after it should be replaced.  Not saying that was the situation here - just that some people need to be protected from themselves!!

Alexa, how much are we talking for a basic suit? I know any custom graphics and other stuff are extra but what's a base price?

Base suit (for 2007 only, then the price will go up) will be around $1200-1500, depending on graphics and features. Included in the price will be a basic graphic design, your name on the back and up to 8 patches per set. Riders will be asked to provide feedback to us so that we can improve on comfort and features. I'm planning to have a set ready in the next 6-8 weeks for folks to check out.

We intend these to be high end custom leathers with some exclusive features and customization second to none. After all the time I've spent taking other leathers apart and seeing what really works, I feel we can offer the best product out there.
