Title: CCS MW at Gateway???????
Post by: h2o_motorsports on August 29, 2006, 12:19:25 PM
Why does CCS have the midwest riders go all the way out to Topeka KS instead of having us run at Gateway?  Wouldnt it me much more affordable for the majority of MW riders to go to Gateway?  Just curious as to why they dont have us run there.  For me its 10 hours to Topeka and only 6 hours to Gateway.

Probably because the track owners and CCS had a bird between each other. Thats my guess.

I was down there for the last CCS Gateway event of the year in 2003. I will NEVER ride a motocycle there again. Reason. That damn chicane to get on the main straight. Way too dangerous. Made the old metal marker posts after the start/finish at Sears Point seem safe. Hit that transistion wrong at Gateway and you more than likely get bucked off. I list Gateway as one of the most dangerous tracks I've ever been at. And yet people complain about BHF.

The track layout is OK once you get out of the last turn. Couldnt get that damn decreasing radius carousel down all weekend. Just frustrated me.

Thats cool.  I dealt with guardrails in Hawaii and would rather not go back to realy dangerous race tracks.  Just that alone would convince me to drive the extra 4 hours.  I will now go and take my vagisil and stop crying.  LOL.  See you all at Blackhawk

I though that they had changed the lay out to get away from that transistion from what I was told last year. I have never been there to know for sure though.

I was gonna say "walls", but freaking topeka is the worst track I've seen for walls...

Gateway sucks when it comes to safety (IMHO).  The layout is cool, but the walls and transitions onto/off of the banking are miserable.

danger aside, why dosent our region race there?

Yes the main reason I started this post was to see why our region doesnt race there.

My guess would be poor turnout, and track owner relationships.  But I don't know those for fact.

Probably the same reason we dont go to putnum anymore.

because CCS and the track got into a pissing contest.

True but CCS GP is owned and ran by TrackAddix and not CCS.

And, from what I understand, it's not a cheap track to rent.

We went there in 2004, but Stumpy said he'll never race there again.  He did really well, but was pretty much creeped out by the place.  I was on the front straight all day watching people highside coming out of the goat path onto the front straight and into the wall.  I don't remember anyone getting hurt (bad) but it was terrifying to watch.

That being said, it was by far one of the most fun weekends we had.  Stumpy, Johnson and I got there early and hit the Budweiser tour at 9:00am.  We were told we could only have 2 samples in the hospitality room after about 4 each--I think 6 if you're Johnson.  Conclusion:  Bud Light is sweeter than Michalob Ultra and Two Fisted Ale makes you want to fight.  This was the same weekend Johnson woke us up at 4:00 am to tell us he was doing no handed wheelies on his 50 in a sumo suit which was a real crowd pleaser.

So, in conclusion, as long as Stumpy wasn't on the track, we had a really great time at Gateway!   :thumb:

We had a great weekend and the TrackAddix's folks along with several MCRA (local St. Louis group) really did a great job.  Couple of accidents on Saturday practise but nothing during the races on Sunday from what I could tell.   The kink (or transition on to the Nascar straight) turn 9 is crazy and tricky but everyone handled it.  Only person to hit a bag was a trackday rider and not a racer.

Lots of fun and I got to sleep in my own bed, so I am all for more races.

A penny for my thoughts and 2 cents for my opinion.  So it cost me about a penny to write this.

I am sure many will disagree and some will agree but, it was a good safe fun event.

We had a great weekend at Gateway.  Trackaddix ran a good program and all of the folks from the MCRA did their normal great job.  It would be nice to have at least one Midwest/Great Plains combined event for next year.  On some trackdays, the MCRA draws 300 to 400 spectators(because they promote the heck out of it). Wouldn't it be awsome to have an event with 150 to 200 riders and 700 to 800 spectators?

That would be awsome! I had a blast this weekend. Anyone remember what times Ed Key was running the last time CCS raced there?

(Sorry again Dave)

faster than we were going thats for sure. If i remember correctly i think i heard low 10's(dont qoute me on that), and if i know Ed he was only going as fast as he needed to go. Torwards the end of the weekend getting into the 11's would have been pretty easy, but it sure does get hard to finding those extra tenths once you get down there(especially when you are 6'5 230lbs on a 74 hp sv). If i remember right, you (KC) were on the yellow sv, i was the AM chasing you guys up front, had a blast and you guys were moving. I think I may have been able to get by spooner and the buell guy to try and run with you but i didnt want to mess up your guys race with my ego. Anyway had a great time hope to see you guys at someother events.

Was that you that got all loopy at the race start, i thought for sure the truck was gonna come out for that stuntin' on the front straight at the start but you jumped back on the bike and rode the hell outta it (even with your meatball!) for that race and a few more... good job!

Who me?......  :banghead: yeah, that was my bonehead move.  I bet you and the grid marshal were thinking  :wtf: "It's going to be a looooong day!" LOL!

From now on I'll leave the stunting to Speedballer.

Thanks for the props.

Yeah, me AND the grid marshall... are one in the same....

It was a sight, glad it turned out like it did though -those events at the start can get UGLY quick!

Keep that shiny side up!

ps if I recall correctly we almost had an encore after the meatball in the hot pits :thumb:

Nah... I had the meatball one under control!

The dude was originally in my spot on the grid.  When I rolled up the 3 board was showing.  At that point, should I somehow get the starters attention to let him know and we can legally move?  I wasn't about to move once I came to a complete stop.

If I saw that you two were adjusting (as I half expected)I would have waited -and the starter ain't startin' shiznit 'til I give him a 'clear' signal 8).  While I work to get the grids settled and accounted for as quickly as possible (to get the race going) I don't want the racers to feel rushed.  Those numbered boards theorectically represent minutes and I have no problem with them being played out to their fullest.

Cool, thanks for the info... next time I will be waving if there is someone in my spot!

No way! You were in MY spot!  :wtf:

I was the green bike next to you that had one of the better seats in the house for the looping demo. I was first to that row and just lined up about where I thought the rightmost slot would be. As soon as you slid in on my right I looked at d!ll (the grid sheriff) and shook my head "no" and pointed at you and me and gave him the back and forth "we are supposed to be reversed" sign. But alas it was too late. When you looped it I thought "Wow, that guy had a great idea to get the race redflagged so we get a restart and won't get meatballed! Why didn't I think of that?"

That was my first meatball and it was kind of cool. At Gateway you hardly lose anything getting a stop and go. AAMOF I didn't lose a position with the stop and go. Finished 5th.

I obviously didn't get to see you pick up your bike and keep going but I think it is WAY kickass that you did. We lined up on the same row in a later race and you walked away from me.  I got into the 11's fairly consistently late in the day so I'm pretty happy with my first time there. Maybe next year we can give you locals a bit more of a race.

I would of gridded between you two, but there wasn't enough room to be safe IMO, especially with my history of launches at Gateway! :)

Yeah, that was F40 (I think) where you were giving me the "keep it lower" sign before the start! LOL

You're right about the stop and go at Gateway.  As I was doing about 100 down pit road, I kept asking myself if they had imposed a speed limit on pit road.  I pulled a pretty good wheelie out of there too!
