Title: Blackhawk speeds for Lightweight
Post by: G-reg on April 05, 2006, 01:58:03 PM
What kind of speeds do the lightweight bikes like SV's hit on the straights at blackhawk?  like 120 or so?

Depends on the rider and bike, but that sounds pretty good.

You looking for lap times or just top speeds?

Greg, your advantage on the KTM will come off the line, into corners & through the infield.  You'll have a tough time on the straights, so you'll need to make it up elsewhere.

Ah, KTM...

I'd look for a dirt section to cut through.

Yeah..  I know its still going to suck on the straights no matter what I do to it.. but the 60mph or whatever it does now isn't going to cut it no matter how fast I go through the infield ;)

Quotethrough the infield ;)

 ;D ;D

Exactly...through the infield.  Not on the track...

I drove my red Ford van on Blackhawk to dry out the track.  I didn't exceed 60MPH in any straight section.  I was backing it into the carousel.  I could to 2:09's.  I could have gone faster, but I don't know how consistenly.

hmm.. if I could jump the dirt birm on the outside of the carousel and land in the turn 6 area...  That might do it  ;D

I'd just turn right at 5 and run back over to the front straight.

I've always thought Blackhawk could have a pretty decent Supermoto track if they used the infield access road and part of the track somehow. I'm sure it wouldn't take much to somehow split the track in 2 and have some sort of a dirt section.

At BHF I've had the SV up to 120 or so on the front straight. She'll only go about 130 135 with the rite gearing and a good wind at my back going down hill anyway.

Stop for a quick cold one then jump back out there and still go faster than everyone eh?  ;D

Greg what kind of KTM do you have.  I will be running my new KTM 450SMR this year.  I just brike it in at Grattan this last weekend.  I raced an SV for the last five years I know I will be getting killed in the straights.

With enough power and the right gearing, you'd be suprised at the speeds a motard can hit.  My CR500 with typical gearing (16/37 or so) will do about 115mph.  My bike is making around 60 hp, and I know some of the big 4-strokes are making quite a bit more.

The biggest gearing problem is the tight ratio MX tranny.  Some tracks I need to compromise top speed for a decent low end.  Any track with a real slow corner and a long straight I will never be geared right for, and I use all 5 geats on pretty much every road course.

I've got a 525, but its got the 4 speed transmission which is just killing me!  I looked into it hoping it was just a wider ratio than the 6 speed like yours has but its not.. my first 4 gears are pretty much the same as the first 4 in the 6 speed..  So I'll put a bigger front sprocket on and see what happens I guess..

Oh brother you are in trouble  ;D  The biggest sprocket that I can use in front is a 15tooth it comes stock with a 14.  If you have the same problem I suggest a rear sprocket of like 40.

and then take a couple inches out of the chain..  ;D

You may want to see how small of a rear sprocket you can run before the chain starts rubbing into the swingarm. I know that was an issue that cb186 was having when trying to gear up his YZF450 motard.

that is correct Edwardo, my fine Guatamalen friend.  ;D

on my 450, i was 16T front(2 up from stock) and 38T rear(10 down from stock) when i ran it at MAM. the chain rubs the swingarm pretty bad, but i'm not sure if the KTM's have the same problem.
of course with my superbike swingarm on it, a 35T rear should work wonderfully, along with the WR 5speed in it now. ;D

while i havent been to BHF yet, i'm guessing you'd be suprised how fast a motard will be there. i was running consistant 1:44's at MAM with a stock motor, stock suspension(except for the 30wt in the forks) and being under geared because of the 4 speed. my goal is to run 1:40-1:41's at the end of the month.
i want to try to make it to Blackhawk, but the schedule isn't cooperating.
