Title: Oil Filter Safety Wire?
Post by: G-reg on April 04, 2006, 07:29:05 AM
Does anyone know the proper way to safety wire the oil filter on a bike that doesn't have an external spin-on filter?

I'm trying to figure out how to do it on a KTM 525, its got an internal oil filter where you just replace the paper element and then screw on the lid.  But the bolts that hold the lid on are tapered on their base and when they're screwed in all the way the head of the bolt is flush with the oil filter cover..  They're very small bolts too so I'm not sure that I could even put a small hole at an angle into the center of the bolt..

Ideas?

put a false external filter on the bike somewhere and safety wire it.

really it shouldn't matter, if you can't safety wire it because the bolts are recessed, I've seen people put a dab of silicone over the bolt to keep it in place (not that this would keep a bolt in place, but it shows you care).

Contact CCS (Eric K) and ask their opinion.

Put a large hose clamp on it and then safetywire that.
