Title: CCS Forum Changes
Post by: Jeff on March 28, 2006, 07:21:33 AM
Ladies & Gentlemen,

I wanted to take a moment to inform you that the CCS Forum is now under new management.  As of 3/24/06, I have assumed ownership of the forum and will be running it just as I do several other major motorcycle forums.

The good news?  Change...
The forum will be moved to a new server and upgraded to the latest release of code.  The new code will have many features which people have been wanting, such as:

Dramatically enhanced searches
Picture posting
Calendar function
In-depth statistics & reporting
Multiple user-selectable skins/themes
and so much more...

I will likely be altering the board (category) layout as I believe the boards could be more specific to enhance the experience of the users.  However, I do not intend for this to be overly complex.  More information will be shared soon on this.

Ultimately the forum will be business as usual, but with a new look/feel and the moderators will have a LOT more control than they do right now.  Speaking of moderators, Dawn has decided to step down in favor of family/work obligations.  I thank Dawn greatly for the service she has provided to this forum for the last several years.  Dave has agreed to remain as moderators of the forum, and I thank him for that as well.  I also have another moderator selected and am awaiting final verification by this person before announcing.

I am really looking forward to this venture and improving our online community.  Should you have any comments, concerns, recommendations, etc, please feel free to email me (jeff@cbr600rr.com) or post them here.

Best regards,

-Jeff Kufalk

Really I was thinking if Dave & Baker were moderators this place would RAWK!

Censors will be turned off in the near future.

The upgrades/changes will take a few weeks to perform.

I figured Mongo would take over this board, thus becoming Supreme Empiror and Unmitigated Dictator of the Racing Internet!  Then after we're all banned, we could put on clown suits and sit on benches by Mc Donalds, hoping to get lucky.....

SMF.  YaBB was abandon several years back and Simple Machines became the successor.  It is much faster and more feature rich than YaBB could ever be.

While I know some folks prefer PHPBB (which is a fine software), or other packages, for stability and familiarity I will be using SMF.

If you want a taste of what it is like, check out www.cbr600rr.com which is SMF with Tiny Portal wrapped around it (allowing for the blocks).

I miss Dawn already!
(Spyderchick scares me.....)
Speaking of fear, I'm afraid I'll have to go over to the 'other board' to ask if this board is down!
I don't like the 'other board'.  They're mean!
(Will this board get mean?)

Dawn?  Don't go!  We're your REAL family!  Your other family (the one you share rent with) doesn't love you like we love you!  They don't even care about you!!  Paul told me Saturday that he hopes you move out!  Stay......Please!

Sniff. :'(

Jeff, I've got to know - - -

How profitable is a message board or chat room?
Title: Re: CCS Forum Changes
Post by: Jeff on March 31, 2006, 07:20:20 AM
It depends on how much your time is worth...

Thus far, this one has done nothing but COST me, so...

A forum like this?  Again, it's about being in the right place at the right time and saying the EXACT right things...  I 've spent more than my share of time having 2 of the above 3 things and losing out.

They basically offset racing.  This year, there is a chance I will race for free (tires/entries/transport/food/repairs/fuel/etc.  as in the WHOLE picture) which would be HUGE.  There is large potential, but it's capitalizing on it that is the hard part.  PROVING to people that there is ROI is very difficult as people have been burned by far too many sources in the past.

Could I retire on a couple of forums?  No.

Do they allow me to race with some high end equipment?  Yes.

Over the last 2 years, I've written off HUGE losses to "Kufalk Media LLC".  However, I cannot do that this year.  Come hell or high water, I have to profit.  If only a dollar, I have to be in the green...

I would tell you that when managed correctly, a forum can provide a reasonable return.  When left to rot, they are nothing but a monthly cost...
Title: Re: CCS Forum Changes
Post by: Mongo on March 31, 2006, 07:22:50 AM
I guess maybe we shouldn't limit our ads as much as we do....
Title: Re: CCS Forum Changes
Post by: Jeff on March 31, 2006, 07:29:21 AM
It's tough man...  It is not an easy thing to do and do RIGHT.  There is a lot more work involved than you'd think (much like anything in life).

What I REALLY need to do is land a marketing broker who can work with me...  I've been lagging greatly on that.
Title: Re: CCS Forum Changes
Post by: Mongo on March 31, 2006, 09:47:52 AM
I pretty much understand how to do it right ;)  I'm just lucky that I don't need ours to be a profitable enterprise I guess, that way I can keep it a lot cleaner (with regard to ad content) and smoother running than other stuff out there.
Title: Re: CCS Forum Changes
Post by: Jeff on March 31, 2006, 10:52:34 AM
Yep, it helps when you don't 'need' or expect revenue from a site.  "doing it right" is keeping that fine balance in 'tact' and being able to benefit your users from the advertising as well as the advertisers themselves (but I'm sure you know that. just posting for those following along).

There are definitely some poorly designed sites out there when it comes to advertising...  No question about it.
