Title: Formula USA Schedule
Post by: Jupiter8racing on December 31, 2002, 10:21:25 AM
All the races are on the east coast with a couple midwest races thrown in. There are a lot of racers in the southwest and west coast that are left out. Why?

Well, I don't have a good reason.

I know that the AMA cleans house with a lot of AMA races on the west.  SW?  I don't know.  In know that when I raced the AMA races in Phoenix, it was kind of a disaster.  Not that that is representative of anything.

But, Pocono is off the list for 2003 too.  It's been a traditional date for quite some time.  Don't know the answer.

It's a shame. I'd like to see FUSA be a national series to rival AMA. With all the races on the east coast it kinda makes FUSA like WERA.

And maybe this is before your time...

Formula USA was originally an open class event held at Willow Springs.  Methanol FZ750's, turbos, GSXR1100's.  Was kind of cool.

I can still remember the smell of the methanol powered gsxr 1100 that Chuck Graves rode when they went to Moroso and the sound of the 2 YZR500's that Team Roberts was running with Petersen and Oliver...

Before then, it was Mike Smith and Kurt Hall.  They finally won, over the YZR500's after switching to Power Mist Methanol.  And Peterson and Oliver were on Nitros shot TZ250's before that..  That was with WERA.

The original FUSA stuff was from way back in like 1985 to 1987 or so.

Nah, this was around 1990, which means I was 20 or so. Like SD said, this was once WERA picked up the Formula USA races and made it into their own national series. It was really cool to see the "run what you brung" classes. Shame no one really does a true national unlimited class anymore.

I also remember Don Jacks wheeling his GSXR 1340 all the way down the Moroso straights lap after lap just playing around...

If we could ever get sponsorship (and/or TV time) I'd do it again in a heartbeat.  Our F1 class is still the same rules as the old FUSA class was - one motor, 2 wheels, and fuel that can be seen when it burns (which means a methanol mix rather than pure methanol).

And Super Dave is very correct.  It was all started by Bill Huth out at Willow.

The TV stuff was nice.  I think late 1990 is when Robert's brough over the 500's.  I raced in Topeka at the WERA/FUSA event in 1990.  They were TZ250's then.

I raced at Atlanta in 1991 (March, I think, or April) for the FUSA thing.  I remember the 500's wheelieing over the hill...

Making myself sound old....

I remember Scott Russell on the stock FZR1000 Team Solmax bike in WERA endurance in 1987.  I even have video.  If I knew then what I knew now...
