Title: Newbie CCS racer
Post by: JonGu on March 22, 2006, 11:43:24 AM
Hey everyone, I'm a NESBA and Sportbike Track Time regular (Intermediate group rider so far) and decided to start racing with CCS this year. Nice forum you got here, gonna be getting a lot of questions from me especially since this is gonna be my first season doing real actual racing vs track days.

Had a few questions to start off with... First about classes, I'm going to be on an 03 SV650 in SS trim. It looks like I can run LWT SS, LWT SB, LWT GP, Thunderbikes, GT Lights, and Supertwins legally, but which classes would I actually want to run in? Like it seems like Supertwins is a bad idea because it's going to be mostly 1000cc twins, etc.

How does registering for races work? Do you register well in advance or do most people just show up and register on the spot?

What needs to be safety wired? All I saw in the rulebook was basically oil caps and drain plugs, what about brake caliper bolts and other stuff like that, and is some sort of silicone or whatever glue acceptable for some of that?

I'm also planning on taking Learning Curves at Blackhawk in May. Looks like the class is on a Saturday, if I pass will I be able to get my license and start racing on Sunday?

Last bunch of misc questions... How many riders do we usually see on LWT bike grids at Blackhawk? Are Am & Ex classes grouped together? If I'm running 1:21's at Blackhawk, 1:13 at Autobahn N and 1:41 at Autobahn S, where would that put me respective to other Amateur LWT SS guys?

Wow, that is a lot of questions, sorry! Thanks for any help

Also reading through the rulebook too... this is pretty funny stuff ;D "Zip-ties and duct tape do not qualify as safe and workman-like mounting." Since when???

Run Gt Lights for track time, LW SS for competitive fun and any other class for more tracktime, and to learn from everyone out there. Supertwins has a few SVs running, so you wouldn't be outclassed, I wouldn't rule it out.

You can pre-register up to 2 weeks in advance, otherwise you do it at the track on Fri eves, Sat or Sun Mornings. There are strict cut-off times, check the website (//www.ccsracing.us) for more info.

If you take the school on Saturday, you can race on Sunday provided your machine passes tech, don't forget numbers. Lithium Motosports usually has some in stock.

Grids depend on weather and which track they're not as big as MW, but certainly respectable.

Oh, and your times are really good, you'll do well.

Have fun!

At the short tracks run whatever you want. You can be competitive in supertwins on an SV.

You need to safety wire everything with oil behind it. Brake calipers do not need to be wired, but in my opinion should be.

The sooneer you register, the better position you will have on the grid. When you first start, I'd recommend signing up at the track. You want to be on the back of the grid at first anyway, Starts are pretty intense.
Plus it's better to start in back and move forward than the other way around.
Don't worry, you can win races from the back row, it happens all the time.

You can race the same weekend you get your license.

Your lap times are good, you'll be just fine. Have fun!

LWGP and Thunderbike would be the fastest classes. SVs can be quite compettitive in supertwins - also tends to be a fun class. So depending upon your budget, I would enter GTL, LWSS, LWSB and Supertwins. If you have spare cash you could enter LWGP and Thunderbike.

Gridding is by order of entry. You will get the best grid position by preentering (at least 2 weeks prior to event).

This will be covered in class. Oil fill, filter, drains, cooler lines must bewired. Coolant drain bolt must be wired. That is about it. The other bolts can be wired (brakes etc) but are not required. Silicone is acceptable instead of wiring ONLY FOR SCHOOL. If you race the next day, you must have wire.

If you pass school and your bike passes tech for racing, you can get your license Sunday morning. Email me if you have any other questions about school or bike prep.

Never was.
