What a wonderful movie. I don't think the masses will understand or care, but every racer should go and see it. Talk about the spirit of the privateer! Having always considered myself one of the most underfunded racers in history, I suddenly feel like Bill Gates Racing....
The shots of the salt flats and vintage streamlined racers at Bonneville were yummy enough to make you want to lick the screen. Ooooooohhhhhh!!!! The Indian was a junkyard jewel. I couldn't stop looking at it, and kept wishing I could pause the movie for a better look.
Hopkins was incredible as the modest old man who just had a dream and refused to quit. It was awesome the way the racing community just fell in love with the old guy and rallied to help him. In fact, this movie showed the racing community and their spirit more accurately than any other film I've seen!
Pretty much you owe it to yourself AND Hopkins to go see this movie. I hear he put out a bunch of his own money to get this project done. Devoid of all the bull$hit that usually goes along with any bike movie, this film really shows us as we are, faults and all.
I absolutely loved it!
I saw this also, and frankly am amazed that nobody else has posted up about it yet.
So many aspects of that film touched me on a personal level... from the opening scene where he's firing up the bike at 6 a.m. (how often we'd done the same thing - much to the chagrin of our neighbors - when scrambling to get the final "tweeks" in before hitting the road) to his lowside on the beach as he tried to get the bike around the corner (again, tapping memories of doing the exact same thing, reaching and surpassing the traction limit of my front tire) to his heart-pounding run across the salt. I spent half the movie wanting to jump out of my seat - and the other half biting my lip, so very badly wanting him to succeed. At the warehouse in L.A., I held my breath as they pulled away the shattered crate... recalled illicit "test runs" of my own as he went blasting along the Nevada highway... and felt my heart run the full emotional roller-coaster when he arrived at Bonneville, climactic screams inside my head as he made his record-breaking run. I could have replaced any number of the racers and officials with folks in the paddock at Blackhawk - the combination of competitive spirit, fellowship and camaraderie are all pretty much the same. It was grass-roots racing at its' absolute purest. Burt proved that "cubic dollars" aren't the only means of achieving horsepower!
The audience in the theater where I saw it was pretty diverse - a few 'gearheads' interspersed with some folks whom I would never expect to see anywhere near a motorcycle - and everyone seemed to be captivated by his humility and quiet determination. Aside from the adrenaline, there was a lesson to be seen. Sir Anthony Hopkins was magnificent (isn't he always?). I cried... and I laughed... and never wanted the film to end.
I ordered the book and it arrived a few days ago - with a little luck, I'll have time to start reading it tomorrow night. And if I could find the original documentary...

Found it!
It's currently playing at the Downer Theatre on the east side of Milwaukee.

Hey K3, when is Highside going to find its way to the big screen?
BTW your frame will be done this weekend so you'll have it next week! Then you can get back to your own grass roots efforts.

Was it as good as Torque?
Hopkins is a great actor and it was a great movie. it really touched my heart to see such dedication, makes my passion and dedication grow just thinking of it.
QuoteWas it as good as Torque?
Just for asking that question, I'm sending Vin Deisel to your house to beat you with a 3/4 inch torque wrench until his arm gets tired. ::)

Dude, that is just mean. It's not like he asked if it was as good as Biker Boyz. That film got snubbed by the Oscars! >:(
I saw it last weekend in Winter Park, an Orlando suburb, at the Winter Park Village. I don't know if it is still showing or not. I was surprised at the number of people in the audience, it was a fairly large crowd for a Sunday afternoon.
I heartily recommend it!

We were going to see it last night, but i was working. We'll be seeing it sometime this weekend.
Watch dave at the movies, he gets grabby...
At the popcorn. ;D
Are we referring to the old hole in the bottom of the popcorn bucket trick? Jack, be careful if Dave offers to buy the extra-large bucket and share it with you. You might wind up with extra butter whether you wanted it or not.... :o
"Jack?"
"Yes Dave?"
"Ah wish Ah could quit yew!"
Sounds like an excellent movie, but I can wait until the DVD comes out. ;D

don't wait. i just got back from watching this movie. absolutely fantastic movie.
really captures the racing spirit and the comradare of the people in the racing world. go see it.
Jack, shall we do 415 since everyone else is lame...LOL!
And where's this place at?
The Downer is just south of UWM on Downer Street.
Go see this movie. I laughed, I cried, I was inspired. And the old fart gets some tail! If that's not inspiring to y'all, I don't know what is! ;)
Seriously, Hopkins loses himself and becomes Burt Munro, completely. Best movie I've seen in a while, and we see a lot of movies. And yes, there is much of the privateer spirit throughout the film. Highly reccomended, don't wait for the DVD.
I saw this movie last weekend...
Cuz I could wait for the DVD to come out...
I went and bought my own tree !

That's like me telling you that it's west of UNO on Dodge St....
Saw the movie tonight at the Downer. Great stuff. I'll buy the DVD so I can watch it again.
Ran into some friends at the theatre unexpectedly so the evening turned into drinks and dinner after at the Troccadero on the east side. Too bad it's a Sunday or we would still be there.............. work comes early tomorrow.
Dave, Mapquest St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee and go about four or five blocks north on Downer Ave. The theatre is on the right, you can't miss it. There's a public parking lot right across the street.
Enjoy ;D ;D
Oopps, the theatre actually is on your left as you're going north on Downer............and it's like 2 blocks not 4or 5. Hey, I said we had drinks tonight.
I got directions.
St Mary's still means nothing to me. I never go to Milwaukee. I know Daytona better...LOL!
Jack! 415PM then with my Tub o' Corn...
Quotespydy, you see it yet? Paul? Chainsaw? JeF4y? H-man.... all Milwaukee Peeps?
Thanks for askin' Jackson. It opened on Feb. 3rd and I saw it on February 7th out here in the Detroit area ;D
Great flick. I actually got annoyed with Tony Hopkins' (SIR Anthony Hopkins to the rest of you) character and dreaded every time he had a line. He was hard of hearing. Seemed like every (or 90%) line he stared with "Huh?" or "What was that?". The sign of great acting. You get so cought up in the portrayal that you get upset or identify with the character.
QuoteThat's like me telling you that it's west of UNO on Dodge St....
Dave, seriously, look at a map. You know? Those paper folded things with the squiggly lines? They even have one of Milwaukee! UWM is the big university indica... aw heck...here's the

Jen and I went and saw it yesterday at the 4:15 showing at the Downer.
I agree, excellent movie, and well done. Sound of the Indian was in my head all night. :)
Edgar, Tommy Mason, ADR and a few of us went and saw it last night as well. A+ and i'm glad i went too see it in the theater, rather than on DVD.
You guys have to go see it. Awesome movie!
It rocks. Jack didn't go for my big bag o' corn...
Really, really cool movie. I think most people outside the racing world won't completely get it, but, for me, it was funny in those ways that sometimes your life is completely different from others.
I think it will still be a cool movie to watch with my wife on DVD.
Quote Jack didn't go for my big bag o' corn...
Jack, I've always felt that I owed you big time for your help with the cover of Highside. But I warned you about the popcorn, so now we're even! 8)

Chris, I swore you were behind me in the movie theatre. The guy must have thought I was checking him out because I had to turn around to get a good look. He had this incessant belly laugh and you could tell he had seen the moview a few times already. Sounded just like you, in a good way. I felt like I was there with friends. Very cool movie.
;D
Great movie, I went to see it last night, It just seemed to be missing some details. When the movie ended, I thought it was at the half way point, after 2 hours it just felt like I just got there. Now I can't wait for the DVD, there has to be loads of deleted scenes.
We just got back from seeing it with a few friends, one of the best movies I have ever seen. I laughed and cried. This is one that I am going to have get on DVD as well. We went to the college because no real theater in our area is showing it, but still an awesome movie.
You guys are too easy to entertain.
I'm going to get a few old farts together and make our own movie. I know plenty of guys with bad tickers and prostate problems.
;)
Hey Don, are you talking about an autobiography?
;D

Odd, but connected point (connected to the previous post anyway).... The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been selected by the Library of Congress to be archived/preserved for future generations 8)
In their words, "'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' is the quintessential midnight movie, offering a participatory moviegoing experience to millions of college students and other fans of this cult classic of American cinema."
It's just a jump

That is so funny you bring up that show, I saw it at the Auditorium (Stage show)here in Chicago WITH Meatloaf in it.
