Title: Cost of Daytona?
Post by: Clay on January 19, 2006, 01:49:13 PM
Ok, with the new pricing structure this year, I'm a little confused.  If I race the Unlim GP, SS, SBK and GTO, what will the Daytona cost be?  Now, what if I don't get a garage?  Is there power w/out a garage?  What about camping?  I know I can't afford a hotel, but I heard that they are going to allow camping somewhere.  Are there any other "little" costs, like gate costs?  How much is the team hammer day?

I'm just trying to come up with a "total cost" to see if I can actually make this happen.  I appreciate the help!

I ended up paying about $2K after everything was said and done in October. I camped $195 for the weekend, about $400~$500 in entry fees, gas, food, I think about 3 sets of tires, odds and ends. Oh the garage I got to share with someone for $150. Garages are $300 for the roll down onesand open garages  :-/ are $150 I believe. Security is a non issue at Daytona because theykeep the riff raff out. Don't speed in the pits on your pit-bike and everyone shares. Newbies have to bring enough beer for everyone. Did I miss anything?

Yeah, garages for bike week are different.  Might require you to get it for ten days or so for $1000.  Don't quote me, but you're dealing with a paddock that will be the big AMA show.  Some of the teams there for the AMA event will set up during the CCS stuff.

One arm, and a leg.  Bring one of those pop-up canopies and a generator.  If you don't have a place to stay yet, consider yourself F--ed.  I stayed in St. Augustine about an hour drive to the north last year.  I stayed close to Disney world in October.  If you preregister, I don't think there is a gate fee.  If you don't preregister, you probably won't be in all those races.  Most importantly, be patient.  I learned that in October, and get there early.

Well, that really sounds like it puts me out of the game.  God, why do we go to Daytona?  Ya know, most of us are working folks and can't really afford this.  :(  It just sucks so much when the sole reason you can't race is because it's too damn expensive!

Because it's Daytona.  You just have to go there once, and then you'll understand.  I haven't got any money either, but Daytona was the experience of a lifetime for me.

It was cheaper years ago, and we complained then.  In the future, it will be more expensive.

It IS Daytona.  It's one of the few places that when people ask where you race, you say I'm racing at "Daytona" or I raced at "Daytona"...you don't have to explain much more.

Daytona does have that brag factor.  Everyone, not only race fans know that Daytona is one of the baddest tracks around.  You should start looking at the October race if you are really interested.

The feeling of railing around the high banks of Daytona with your elbow seemingly skimming along the wall is hard to describe. Imagine the G-forces slamming your chest down into your tank and straining your neck as you struggle to look far enough ahead through the turn, all the while trying to let the bike have it's head and not scrub off too much precious speed. Imagine catching a sniff of a draft, then slingshot passing another racer just before you cross the finish line. Now imagine standing on the podium in Victory Lane, where so many legends of racing have stood...

Yes, it's expensive. More importantly, it's dangerous, intimidating and unforgiving. But it's Daytona, dammit. And there's nothing else like it.
