I just saw this guy in my backyard. Where I'm at and what I just read up on him, do they live in the US too, because it says they come from Africa south of the Sahara, in well-wooded and forested areas. I was surprised to see him sitting on the fence.

So.....
What type of hawk is it?
We get a marsh hawk on a regular basis. He likes the critters that nosh around the bird feeders. He's only gotten a few though.
It's pretty cool living by the Root River Parkway. We've seen all sorts of wildlife in last tw-ahem-enty years we've lived around here.

He's a African Goshawk, what I don't understand is I'm in Melrose Park, IL, not rural area. How did he get here, it says they migrate in Africa! Could it be our climate changes bring him here?
BTW - HE WAS HUGE!!

You better hope you don't need your leathers repaired soon...... :o
;)
I think that it is a Broad-winged Hawk

It won't let me in without registration, can you post a pic? Shouldn't he be more out to rural areas though?

Lots of hawks and falcons are attracted to urban areas for mice and rats.

He reminds me of a hawk that is in the midwest/Canada area (although his beak looks a bit heavier). I'll check my bird book tonight.
Maybe that is him, but his head was lighter, that's why when I looked it up too, he resembled the one I saw, can I say again, HE WAS HUGE, and beautiful. He's a meat eater. Thanks, I want to try and get a picture of him, he's been hanging out for a while.
If it was an African Goshawk, most likely it escaped captivity or is the decendant of an escaped pair. They arent migratory birds.
Try looking in this site for a more likely match.

It COULD be an african, but I dont know if they are adaptable to the weather here.
Thanks for the info Rob!! That's a cool site, when you get in the cursor has a bird flying with it, that's neat. ;D
