Title: Flat Slides & Racing in the Rain
Post by: grasshopper on January 05, 2006, 12:02:27 PM
Anyone who races with Flat Slides with Velocity stacks ever have problems while racing in the rain? I'm picking up a set for the SV and was wondering about that rite now. The tank covers them up pretty good, but you how water is, it finds a way in.

Thanks

Nick

I had open velocity stacks on my GS500 for 3 seasons, on 36mm CV carbs off a GSX-R1100. I rode it in the rain a handful of times and didn't ever have any problems to speak of.

Not an SV, of course, but I'm assuming the carbs are hidden just as well, maybe better, between the V on and SV than the ones sticking out the back of the GS's head.

I don't think riding in the rain would be a problem, sliding in the dirt/mud from a crash could.

Thanks guys,

I'll keep the dirt advice in mind incase I ever convert to a flat tracker. ;D

But that's what the CR is for.

I wonder why Dave hasn't responded with some kind of argument or biased statement?  ???

Is that what you want?

Moisture is going to come in.  What do you want to argue?  How much depends upon a huge number of variables.

If you crash in a gravel trap, don't try to restart the engine until you've gone back to the pits and removed all the gravel from the velocity stacks.  You think water gets everywhere?

As long as you don't have a ram air airbox it should not be a problem.

Nick -

I would put something in front of the take to protect against rocks (or put some Uni filters on them).  I had a race at BeaveRun in the wet.  I was leading by quite a bit and with 2 laps to go, my throttle stuck wide open.  Needless to say the pucker factor was quite high, as I had to go through BeaveRun's turn before the back straight wide open.  Not fun.

Once we got the bike back in the garage, there was an extremely small rock lodged into one of the slides that forced it completely open.

It could happen at anytime, but I ran the flatslides for a year and that was the only incident I had with them.

It was, but I later knew I could go faster through that one turn.   ;D

I was so bummed after pulling off the track, losing out on a race win.  Looking back, I should have tried to finish the last 2 laps with the clutch.   :o
