Title: Winter Fun! Crash Tally Thread
Post by: J Farrell / Speed Tech Motorsp on November 29, 2005, 07:39:43 PM
I think this one will be a fun one. I would like to know how many crashes approximately you have been in while just roadracing.  :)

Me personally, I keep track of them all and I am now up to 53!! :o Well I have been roadracing for going on 12 years.

Lets see some numbers.

My worst injury was all in one crash at Mid Ohio in 1997. 2 broken bones in left foot, 1 in right, broken collarbone, 2 broken ribs and one heck of a bruised body!
Other injuries are only of last season with a dislocated pinky which still  bothers me today.

I have had some spectactular crashes in my day I'll tell you that. I have been one of the lucky riders who hardly gets injured. I'd better knock on wood so they say. I have managed to total 3 bikes alone at Road America.
Grattan has taken quite a few shares of crashes for me too. I miss that track. One of my favorites actually.

Funny thing is my worst injury ever was 3 crushed vertebras in my middle back area, 7 broken ribs & a puncture wound to my head back in 2000 while at work I fell off a roof and landed upside down on my head and back on a stepping stone in the grass. Ouch :o

Oh one other was crashing on a snowboard only 3 1/2 months after that and not remembering the whole day before that or 12 hrs after it happened. I couldn't walk for over 3-4 weeks. Lost my balance.
Hmm, maybe thats why I have a headache ???
Lets hear some stories,
Farrell

Hey Jason, where in Oshkosh are you located?

As far as crashing goes I think I'm around mid twenty something.   Worst was at BHF.  Inner cranial bleeding, two(C5-C7) vertibrea, clavical, scapula, seperated shoulder, and tweeked elbow. My left side took a beating.  ;D
Woke up at St. Anthony's in Rockford a day later.   ::)

Ouch! That sucked huh! :-/
My shop is on the Hwys 41 & 44. If your coming south down 41 through Oshkosh get off on 44 you'll see the shop on the off ramp right there. Can't miss it. You might even see all the grass ripped up from our lastest dirt bike excapade if it isn't snowing again.
Address is:

I'm actually on west frontage street Washburn next to the highway.

Well just this year
I fell down 12 times.
I fell 4 times out of the lead of races this year.
I should be able to make a few year without crashing now huh?? :-/

I guess I'm the king of riding the front tire hard into a turn. I just keep pushing it until it slides then I know where the limit is. Sometimes I have to fall to find it.
Funny thing is when I crash. I always say give me my bike or my back up bike now cause I'm ready to ride because I finally found out how much the front can take. I usually almost always go faster after I crash.
I'm the same way on a dirtbike. I just push the front until I lowside and I'll do it over & over until I get it right on the edge of sliding and losing it.
I have countless times of losing the front end and picking it back up and finishing the race.

Dan I saw your crash @ Gingerman this year. Spectacular! That was an interesting race to watch in lead changes. Many crashes in that race.
I usually don't crash while racing but trust me I've had my share of that too. That puts salt on the wound! >:(
Gotta say you can really throw a glove! I was waiting for the helmet to take a flying too!

ya ya...I figured I better not throw a $700 X11...lol
I've cost myself enough..lol

I'm hoping next year (I'll either be on a 06 R6 or a 06 GSXR600) I'll have the front end issues sorted out and I'll quit falling on the front.
This year out of my 12 crashes, only 2 times were totally my fault (once trail braking too much and the other time I got a false neutral and tucked the front).  The 05 R6 is good at pushing the front end thru a turn and I'm kinda like you I just keep going faster and faster...until I fall...
I gotta start taking tips from Larry D, he parks it in the turns but he's hard as hell on the brakes and awesome on the gas to make up for it.   He gets his bike in there fast turned and stood back up to get on the gas super fast

WAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I second that!  We should send Mr. Ortega to DAN-ger managment training! ;)

I stopped counting.  I think that my current set of Vansons has 7 crashes on it.

I never keep count. But it gets less and less every season. My first season out I crashed out at least a dozen times... This past season it was twice. One my fault, one was not.

The one that was my fault was a really cool crash though. BFR in the rain, last lap, trying to overtake another bike at the line, didn't do it... got off of the race line by about a foot, hit the brakes at about the tower and down I went. I slid from the tower all the way down to turn one. Farthest slide I have ever had!

What I didnt know was that is was the final lap. I thought I had one more lap to go, thats why I was trying so hard to pass. (there was some confusion on the flags, I never saw the checkered)

Any how.. the bike seemed to tuck the front and just slid along with me till the bike hit the grass and it just tore the poor girl apart! Pieces went flying everywhere! I got to my feet realizing that I was directly in the race line of T-1. I popped to my feet, ran to the bike, the corner worker helped me get it up to no avail. It was just too damaged to continue.

Now keep in mind that I thought there was 1 lap left so I was a little more than pissed at myself for crashing out. So.... I tried to turn my gas tank into a golf ball!

Bottom line is that I finished in 5th place in that race sliding on my azz!

Some of you may rember that one. Kevin Clark crashed out in the same place I did (on or about lap 2 or 3.) So we had the honor taking the ride of shame together back to the pits.

(I told him to wave like we were riding on a parade float)  ;D

I don't keep count, but I do write race reports for each weekend, so here it is:

2000 = 0
2001 = 4 crashes (out of 6 weekends)
2002 = 3 crashes
2003 = 3 crashes
2004 = 3 crashes
2005 = 3 crashes

Damn...  I'm in a rut on that 3 crash thing.  My worst crash was going head-first into the tirewall of T4 at BHF.  The spectators said I was still in the air when I hit it.  It was so hard I thought I hit the bike.  I was scared that I broke my neck.  Turned out to be a couple of compressed vertabrae in my neck.

Lots of bruises, pulls, strains & sprains, and one mildly broken ankle.  But thus far (knock on wood) nothing that I would deem serious.

QuoteDamn...  I'm in a rut on that 3 crash thing.

Stumpy had 3 in one weekend in 2004 for cripes sake.  None too bad.  So don't feel bad about 3 a year!

In 2004, Stumpy fell 6 times in 10 weekends.  I don't remember 2003 except he fell twice at Road America that year, too.

In 2005 he fell twice at Road America in April and once on his Giant TCR-2--the worst road rash he's ever had from a bike.

You guys crash too much  :P  I still remember all mine:

2005 - Lowsided out of the lead of the November ASMA Lightwieght Superbike race on the motard (my wife was in second at the time).  Got back up and managed to re-pass a few people.  Motards crash really well.

2004 - Highsided the motard out of the lead of the November ASMA Am. 600 Superbike race.  Last lap, coming out of the last corner.  It was 35 degrees and pouring, I was running a full rain front and a shagged DOT rear.  I had just come around the outside of three bikes in the second-to-last corner. including the second place expert.  The win would have given me the championship, instead I ended up with a broken wrist.

2004 - Lowsided the R6 at Firebird East in Am. ULGP going into the lake turn (about the fastest turn on the track, which still isn't very fast).  It was a drying track, I got a lousy start and everyone in front of me was riding like a pansy on the dry line.  Unfortunately the only place to pass them was off the dry line.  The first few passes worked out fine...  I was OK after a loooong tumble, the bike caught the curbing and flew 10 feet in the air.

2003 - Highsided the R6 coming out of the busstop at Arroyo Seco.  Landed on my head.  Concussion, and otherwise tweaked body.  After pitching me, the bike ghost rode off into the dirt and fell over with no damage.

Those are the ones that count, plus a track day crash in 2002, a cold tire crash at a school, and a whole bunch of crashes in the dirt in a few supermoto races (those seemed to happen every other lap).

-z.

not too exciting for me.  Only 4.

First - 2003 Lowside at Blackhawk between 6 and 6a - target fixation...grass is kinda slick...Broke a rib.

Second - 2003 T7 at BFR, lowside.  Guy checke up in front of me..I hit the brakes and got rear-ended....re-broke that rib (a month later) - Poor Mike Firca took the chopper ride in that crash.

Third - 2005 Highside coming out of the bend at RA.  On the gas too hard, rear came around.  No injuries.

Fourth - 2005 T7 at BFR, lowside - tucked the front.  No injuries

the only other "racing" injury I had was at RA this year...got my middle finger crushed int he chain while cleaning it....i dont recomend anyone trying that

One at turn one Brainerd. *my personal crown jewel*
Two in turn ten at Brainerd.
One in turn ten at MAM
One in turn one at MAM

Guess those two tracks have my number...

If you guys go as slow as I do you just won't crash ;D

Although it seems I'm good for one a year.

I just never kept track.

All that I know is that I am on 4 or 5 shoulder injuries.

I think I am on 7 or 8 helmets I have replaced.

1997- Entering T1 at Summit Point, just prior to my turn in point I was rear-ended by an FZR400 sliding along its side at 80mph (guy tucked the front on a cold, dew covered track) .  My GS500 was knocked right out from under me.  I landed on my back and slid feet first to the edge of the track.  No injuries but later I was feeling like I had done a serious workout.

2004- Decided to try my '85 VF500F in a race at VIR.  During practice I lost the rear in T11.  Dunlop GT501s and 20-year old suspension aren't the greatest for the track.  I slid a little on my side, got rotated and log-rolled really far, probably to at least 20ft off course.  I was really dizzy when I stood up but I managed to find the cornerworkers and give them a thumbs up.  The whole front end of the bike was really twisted up.

2005- T1 at Summit.  The 2nd practice session for my first weekend of putting my DR650 on the track.  Lost the front end on the 2nd lap-cold Trailwings were the culprit.  Scuffed my leathers, bent the handlebar and oil cooler guard and broke off the brake lever.

My SV650 has remained mint for the three years I've been racing it.

I have far more streets crashes, usually in the rain.

Let's see
Road America = 13 crashes
Grattan = 14
Daytona= 3
Blackhawk = 9
Mid Ohio = 3
Road Atlanta = 1
Brainerd = 3
Topeka = 1
Gingerman =6

Bikes totaled = 5
Crash Damage Amount  = I don't want to know
Roadrash = 1 time only size of a quarter
Broken bones= 6 all at one time
Highsides= 3
Lowsides= 40 something
Strange ones = 10
Crashed with someone else = 3
Screaming mad cause I wrecked= Countless (just ask Baker about turn 8 Road America 04 when a buell blew an oil line!)
Being able to tell the stories 5000 times = priceless :D

WOW - I'm obviously not pushing it hard enough!  Only 7 I can remember in 4 years - not counting off-track excursions where I didn't fall down.

2002 - T3 BHF lowside - ribs, concussion

2002 - T13 RA highside under the bridge - Can't believe bike was fine & I only sprained an ankle.  All kinds of funky brown stuff inside my leathers though.  I'm guessing this 'materialized' about the time I was upside down, in the air looking back (and down) at my bike speculating on how it was going to feel when I hit the track.

2003 the kink before T7 BHF - I tell you what.  My lasting impression is that crashing at 100?? mph is a whole new deal compared to 70 or 80.  Only remember the initial impact with the ground.  The bike & I were way out in the weeds.  I'm told they couldn't find me until I sat up.  Don't remember anything though until about an hour later.  Very lucky - only broken ribs, concussion.  I was a slow moving vehicle with no neck (had to turn my shoulders to look to either side) for a few weeks.  Had to get a metal detector to find the key for the bike - but I found it.

2003 - T1 BHF - lost the front with 3 laps to go - no injuries.  Was a GTU or GTO, was dicing back & forth for the lead (on an F3).  The first & last time I've ever done that except in F40.  As the crash indicates, I was in a bit over my head.

2004 entering T9 under the bridge at RA.  Had rained/died but was still a slightly wet spot under the bridge.  Lost the rear.  Very enjoyable, easy slide into the gravel.

2004 T1 MAM - Ross' bike.  Don't know how this one happened.  Was just going to take his bike for a spin, was going pretty slow coming into one (cold tires) and bam - high side.  Lower back was messed up for a good while.  Had to drive through puddles to get to the track - maybe the side of the tire was still wet.

2005 T7 BHF - Tried to take an inside line to pass, bike in front of me took away the line, had to brake so hard it flipped right over on top of me.  I was so focused on not hitting the other bike I didn't even realize it was coming up.  Saw I had him cleared thought all was well until I felt the bodywork in the small of my back.  Broken thumb (three pins), broken collar bone (plate & 9 screws), 2 broken ribs.

All of them more or less my own fault.

QuoteThird - 2005 Highside coming out of the bend at RA.  On the gas too hard, rear came around.  No injuries.

No injuries to you but the bike had a few complaints to say the least!  That thing with the finger & the chain don't sound too good either.  I did something similar but it involved running two fingers around a pulley btw the pulley & the fan belt of a running motor.  DAM that hurt.

...

Wow... Only 5 in 3 years for me...

2003~ Gingerman, Turn 7 #901 tucked the front as I was passing on the outside... He collected my Rear wheel.

2003~ BHF, Turn 7 Highside/lowside Flicked up, but not off the bike... Landed only to finish in a graceful lowside

2004~ RA, Turn 1 Highside, I was Flicked before I even knew I had done bad :(
2004~ RA, Turn 6 Lowside... It was a soft crash.

2005~ Gingerman, Turn 11, Another soft lowside ;D

No broken bones, No transports....
I think I need to push it alittle more! (who had 12 this year?)

1993 - 8 (am)
1994 - 1 (ex) worse than the 8 previous put together
2004 - 3 (all during testing  ??? )
2005 - 0 (albeit in very limited riding)

Roadbike - 4 , all of which were worse than 90% of motorcycle accidents

MTB - 4 , to be considered an actual "crash" on a MTB it has to be bad.

pit bike(s) - 3 (wheelied into a dumpster once)

Of the 8 am crashes, 7 were results of being taken out... another reason to go expert ASAP.

Ok, I'm not gonna count any of my motocross.That would take days.... I'll start off with my worst road course crash - Last year at Blackhawk Entering into the kink down the back straight - top of 5th gear on an SV650 - some guy put a rod through his engine case and covered the track in oil - leaned the bike into the kink and lost the front - beforeI knew it I was flipping and smacking my ankel of the pavment. Long story short I broke my ankel in three places and completley crushed every piece of tissue, muscel, ligament and tendons. Doc's thought that I had compartment syndrom and that I was gonna lose my foot, over a year ago and I still have discoloration and very poor use of my foot(still in PT).I didn't walk for three months. Since I have been RR - 2003: 1 collision w/rider lowside
               2004: 4
               2005: 7 -two in 1 race @bhwk 1highside 1 lowside, 1 lowside @Road America AMA in front of SPEED channel cameras, 1 @Autobahn north, 1 lowside @ Gingerman, 1 lowside @ Bhawk , another lowside somewhere else "can't remember" and last but not least collided with Johnny Moore and crashed. This is where it is gonna sound like i'm making excuses, but seriousley - there was a stint of six or seven weekends in a row that I low sided ......

1984 sears point: lowside turn 11

1984 sears point: lowside turn 4 racing in practice (rookie mistake)

1984 sears point: lowside turn 2

1984 sears point: too hot entrance to carousel, another lowside.

Was living with a junkie at the time who just laughed at me when i tried to explain that what he was doing for fun was dangerous and was gonna kill him. RD400 and i survived unscathed.

1988 sears point: lowside turn 3--mangled my rz350 racing for 10th in f1- crashing while pushing in an unimportant race (i.e racing up a class, not in the points chase---screwed up my run for lw sb championship....

1988 sears: yellow plate lowsides directly in front of me on the warm up lap in 8a....run him over, break his femur, i end up in the weeds with numb legs.... took corner workers a while to find me....legs work fine, compression fracture t4-t5...still bothers...

1991 sears: at the apex of turn 7 is a corner worker with a STOP SIGN... this is displayed to inform riders to gently come to a stop just past 7 if there is a red flag.. normally you will have seen waving red at the entrance to 7 or further back turn 4,5, or 6...unfortunately if the STOP sign is displayed just after you have passed the flagging station at the entrance to 7, your 1st indication of red flag conditions is a STOP sign at the apex...well dude in front of me saw STOP, checked up at full lean, i rear ended him......ninja 250 survived unscathed....don't know if afm ever changed the way they do things down in 7...

2002 pocono: 1st race back after 10 years off. Back of the grid, lightweight something something....i'm thinking its  a 2 wave start....everyone goes, leaving me sitting there, furiously steam around 1st lap, catch a few, run off into the field outside turn 1... manage not to crash, but hit one bump/ditch so hard that the pipe is bent up a good 6 inches....still can't figure that out....unfortunate guy behind me follows me off, gets a helicopter ride....

2002 summit: near highside in 7, run off riders right in 8 while on the brakes.. auger in as soon as front wheel finds dirt, hit tires so hard i see stars...neck hurts like hell, but hey im a doctor, i don't need to go to the emergency room........luckily i'm right..(stupid but right)...go to pick up a gas can, loading up to leave....damn, arm lengthens a good 1/2 inch, hurts like hell.... shoulder subluxion, bothers me for 2 years...

2003 roebling: lowside, 1st lap, chasing ducatis in supertwins on sv....repeat of 1988 mistake: racing too hard in a class i'm not competitive in...

2003 barber: lowside  exit 5, chasing James Chance: simple stupidity

2004 VIR: my buddy tries to come under me in 3... contact. both go down..."racing incident"

2004 summit: punky little lowside exiting 5...stupid..

2004 VIR: old tires, red mist, passed about 6 bikes in 2 laps, now in 2nd, throw away front end in hogpen....spend some time sliding on my back, watching my bike descend from altitude, hoping it doesn't land on me....Steve Long designates me "master of all destruction", whines about me repeatedly destroying "his" bike, while i singlehandedly finance his harley...

2005 Summit: fall off in the gravel outside turn 1 at circus clown speed TWICE in one weekend

2005 Summit: guy on a buell (dave watson)highsides directly in front of me in 10...nowhere to go, I t-bone him..he gets a broken pelvis, i reinjure the shoulder....I get to play doctor to the poor guy I just ran over, help the medics prep him for transport....He fortunately doesn't hate me and is a very nice guy....3rd guy in tbones daves bike.....pics of this are crash page worthy.....

2005 VIR..another rookie mistake....crummy start, storming to the front, 1st lap--lose both ends in the 1st left hander of the climbing esses--nice lowside....Dan Riter is forced off into the dirt avoiding running me over.....next lap he comes by looks over to see if i'm ok, runs off the track again!!

Near misses, honorable mention:

1988 Sears: rz brake don't feel right, barely get the bike stopped before hitting the tire wall at 1mph....dumbass mechanic(me) managed to get both pads on the same side of one of the discs!!

2005 Summit, turn 4: hit as hard as i've ever been hit without crashing by Keener while avoiding the remaining pieces of Art Diaz's helicoptering Buell.

2005 Summit: Rain leaves a puddle to the inside of 6...Neglecting the possibility of tossing water onto the track and crashing someone else out, I think "wow, it'd be cool to drag my knee thru this" ... splash water on my own rear, get so sideways i see my rear number plate, bike saves itself.....

Don't know why its so fun to replay these msiadventures, but it is......

My most crashed bike, CB750F - 5. Least crashed bike, FZ750 - 0. My injury rate, i.e. broken bones is 40% with right collarbone being my favorite, 8 times.

Most memorable crash occured in 1989 while contesting the lead in an AMA Battle of the Twins race at RA. Ducati, meet the Billy Mitchel bridge abutment. This was before the wonderful invention of air fence. The bad news, multiple broken bones, multiple surgeries, multiple year recovery and the ony time I've ever completely destroyed a motorcycle.

The good news, I didn't own the Ducati.

Yikes. It's scary when you count 'em up. Mostly got up and walked away. But three massive highsides accounted for 3 closed head injuries, broken foot/wrist, shoulder blade and collarbone/ribs with punctured lung combo.

1994 = 1 Totalled GPz 550 (wife's bike).
1995 = 1 Totalled FZR 400. Highside in BIR T2.
1996 = 0 Too scared to ride fast enough to crash. Took all year to regain confidence.
1997 = 1 Cold tire lowside.
1998 = 2 TZ 125 rider hit me in the azz, plus a rain crash. Do those really count?
1999 = 1 Highsided a buddy's TL 1000.
2000 = 1 Highsided during 24-hours of Willow.
2001 = 1 No brakes in T1 at Road America!
2002 = 1 Cold tire lowside.
2003 = 2 Bought tire warmers, but crashed anyway. Crashed in someone else's oil at RA.
2004 = 1 Crashed out of the lead at Gingerman.
2005 = 5 WTF? ?!?

This season was obviously my worst for crashing. Starting with running my brake lever into the back of Greg Avello just off the start going into T2 at Autobahn. Hit him so hard the impact broke the lever off in his tail section. Can you say instant stoppie? I knew you could. Special thanks to Vic Hyman for not running over my head. Twice.

The other 4 were just stupid old me pushing too hard against the laws of physics while trying to beat Ed Key (and spotting him 170+ pounds). Time for me and my bike to go on a diet...

2003 - rookie year, low sided my 600 trying to race a 250 through the twisties (I was stomping him in the straights, determined to stay in front)

2004 - hydroplaned in T1 at NHIS in the pouring rain, did not scrub any speed, went down around 100mph, severe dislocated right thumb, gee i'm dumb.

2005 - highsided in T2 at NHIS in the rain again; did my whole left arm, raced two hours later, closing in on first place, lowsided in T3 on white flag lap, got back on and finished 6th.

More to come...

Unfortunately I can make a contribution to this thread since I've been busy crashing this year.

2003 - No crashes
2004 - No crashes
2005 - 5 crashes

First crash - March at Firebird East morning practice on a damp drying track.  Realize I am in the SW and water doesn't come around often.  This would be my first time on a wet racetrack.  Brand new tires, first turn after pit-out, spun up the rear a little before I was straight up and down, and found the rear tire in front of me.  Minor getoff, was able to laugh about it, and keep riding my session.

June - Tucked the front mid-race, was fine until I got to the pea gravel and tumbled.  Had my arm out more then I should and had a partial rotator cuff tear.

October - Daytona ROC - Thursday practice, second session.  On the pit-out lap I thought I'd get ahead of some slower bikes and push tires that weren't up to temp a little too much and lost the front.  No big deal, picked the bike up and kept riding.

October - Daytona ROC - Sunday LW GP Race.  Having carb issues, bike not running well, just limping around the track in 5th place, was hit by Nate Kern in the infield.  Caused me to highside.  Did a fair bit of damage to the bike, but I walked away just a little sore.

November - Final race weekend, practice day, I lowsided, should have been minor, but leg got caught under bike and rest of my body twisted, it didn't budge.  I just got checked by an Ortho, will have an MRI.  Looks like knee surgery might be in my future.  Possible Miniscus tear and/or Lateral Collateral ligament.  I also badly bruised a couple of ribs and my sternum.  This one was painful and I hope to be riding for the beginning of next season.  Doesn't look like I'll get to much winter riding.  I rode enough in my Sunday race day to win my 2 regional championships, but in major pain.  If the championships weren't on the line, no way I would have ridden.

QuoteSome of you may rember that one. Kevin Clark crashed out in the same place I did (on or about lap 2 or 3.) So we had the honor taking the ride of shame together back to the pits.

(I told him to wave like we were riding on a parade float)  ;D

I crashed trying to pass Ed Key. Who were you trying to pass? ;D

2002= 12 race weekends. 0 crashes
2003= 7 race weekends. 1 crash (Somebody ran me off the track in practice >:()
2004= 10 race weekends and 1 track day. 1 crash (turn 5 at BHF in the pouring rain. Last lap of course)
2005= 10 race weekends and 1 track day. 2 crashes. The front end tuck in the rain at BHF and a high speed come apart at Gingerman. I had a couple of off track excursions but didn't fall down.
No injuries.Knock on wood.

Yeah, the brain is amazing. No memory of my three worst crashes. Nothing. Probably a good thing.

Sometimes I forget other things too, so maybe that does explain a lot. My wife says that's not a good excuse...

I follow the rule mentioned earlier, if you go slow you don't crash much  ;D  ...6 in 3 years.
