I was pretty sure big buck number five got away Saturday, but he did not.  That's how many trophy types have given me nice shots in my lifetime (0 for 4).  Decided before I went Saturday that I was going to let the does pass to wait for a buck.  I put up my tree stand Friday night (Navarino, WI) & went out Saturday morning.  I was using the 20 GA due to the recent/troublesome plate on my collar bone (Aug 27 – BHF – turn 7).  Was supposed to shoot lefty according to the doc, but decided not to.  First doe came by at about 7:30 & I let it go.  Then next came by at about 8:00 and it got a little spooked when it came across the path I made walking in and took a ninety to the right.  At that same time I noticed the buck following & he must have noticed her spook & decided to ninety to the left across the far side of the marsh in front of me about 50 yards out.  Big deer, 9 pt, 180lbs???, 18.5" spread.  He went trotting out, I rested on a branch & took my shot & missed, but he stopped when I shot.  I shot again & he dropped straight down. Very strange – no flopping, did not fall sideways, almost like he just decided to hide.  I was thinking about the one that got away after I hit it two years ago, so I figured where his body should be  based on what I could see of his antlers and I fired again.  He stopped moving his head.  I kept the gun on him for 5 min.  Then I lowered it, but watched intently for another five min, ready to fire if he got up.  I could see he was still alive, so I figured I better have more than two shells in my gun when he gets up.  As soon as the gun made the noise of the first shell going in he was up and took two bounds & gone.  He looked completely healthy.  I shot twice as he bounded away.  I was very disappointed.  It was very likely I had never even hit him.  I heard him a few times over the next half an hour moving away through the brush.  I knew if I hit him it was not very good so I decided to wait for at least an hour before I went to look.  Went down & found blood, but not much.  We had about 4 inches of snow so he was easy to track ( would have never found him without the snow – he zigzagged all over).  Figured I'd be at this all day.  Had not heard any shooting in the direction he went fortunately.  He had laid down a couple times, but not a lot of blood.  Went through the slashings out into the marsh grass & thick brush.  He got up about 15 yards ahead of me heading for deeper water.  I had no shot, ran to my left and got a decent shot as he was jumping the creek.  Got him in the back of the neck & he went right down, broke through the ice in the creek.  I could see then I had hit him high on his left side and it had gone through & broken his right shoulder.  Could tell later had hit neither lung (when I cleaned him).  I left my tag back at the tree & did not want to clean him without tagging him, so I dragged him through the marsh & the brush (no trail) for several hundred yards to get back to the trail & then down to the trail to my tree.  It was quit a drag to the car (probably almost a mile all together) – the deer, a ladder, back-pack, tree stand, three extra coats and my gun.  It took until 2:00 to start the car ready to go.  I had to get the kids (each with a back pack & other stuff) so I put all the hunting stuff in the trunk & the deer on top of the trunk.  Was quit a task getting him up there.  Still could not get him tied down.  Someone happened by & helped me tie him down.

If someone can host an image for me, i'll send a picture so you can see the big guy.

Just got back an hour ago.  Blew off work last Friday at the last minute and decided to go north. (Phillips).

No real bragging about the deer.  Long story short, in the end my brother in law, nephew and I came away with three bucks and two does.  No trophies, just decent venison.

My best shot was on a medium size buck at a full run going straight away at 175 yards.  I was standing, no rest.  The good news is that it was one shot.  The bad news is that you know what the target was...and I hit it....7mm mag...lost some steaks out of that one.   :'(

Glad to be home.

Paul go boom.... Buck fall down....   ;D

Yesterday morning Paul got this one on our land, about 150 yards from where he was sitting with his 7mm-.08.  One shot high through the lungs and the deer dropped where he stood.

The buck has a heavy main beam, but short tines unfortunately.  We put this one on my tag so I don't have to go out and can concentrate on Thanksgiving dinner.

We giggled too when we read where Don took the buck, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

You gotta love where we live.  The bus driver, when dropping Renee off from school, didn't move until all the kids could get done oooing and aaahhing over the deer.   ;D

[Slight change of subject here]

Excellent choice of cartridge!  Boy, I could really enjoy chatting it up with Paul.  I love the 7-08mm!  It's not all that popular, but it has the ballistic characteristics of a .280 and is a short throw round.  Being a 7 mm, there are beaucoup bullets to choose from if you reload your own rounds.

I've a beautiful Remington 700, stainless steel barrel and synthetic stock chambered in 7-08mm.  I bought it thinking I might go deer hunting or really challenge myself trying to get onna dem der big horn sheep.  I've yet to do either :( .  But that's another story.
