Title: To race or not to race...that is the question
Post by: Team-G on November 03, 2005, 04:56:57 PM
The Doc explained to me after performing shoulder ligament reconstruction surgery that any similar crashes causing the same type of trauma would most likely result in irreversible permanent damage; at least in my case.

Has anyone undergone major ligature/ligament reconstruction, crashed in a similar manner, and healed up good or not so good?

Thanks!

I kinda of have had the same thing told to me by the doc....In 2001 I crashed during the AMA weekend at road atlanta and broke my foot in three places right at some major joints in the foot...I had surgery and came back the following year reak strong as if nothing ever happened..Well doc said after the surgery to find a new hobby so they all say..In 2003 had another get off and did some damage to the same foot causing damage to the steel plates..they went back in and fixed it but it has never felt like the first repair...sorry for the story but listen to the doctor he may be right about what he is telling you....thats my two cents hope it helps :-/

Are you really going to listen to us if we tell you to stop racing...look you 2nd  guessing the doctor...what makes you think you wont 2nd guess us?  If you want to race you will.  Only you can decide...it will be tough. Good Luck

He just heard I might be racing a 600 next year. I think he's scared. ;D Just kidding. Heal up and see how you feel. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Dave,

I had 3 ligaments reattatched in my right shoulder several years ago (not a racing crash, hey rollerblading is dangerous stuff!).

As was mentioned above only you can make that decision, a lot depends on how bad your shoulder was to start with and how well the surgery went (Was your surgeon sports related?). I have bicep tendonitis as a result of scar tissue and if I tore it up again then I would probably have some serious mobility issues. That said I still water ski, dirt bike, race, bicycle and sometimes I even go rollerblading.

Take your PT VERY seriously, the stronger the rotator cuff and supporting muscles are the less likely you are to re-injure, and see how you feel next spring.

Best of luck with your recovery.

Paul

Dave, no good answers.

Life is risky.  You get in a car crash, and you could have similar results.  I don't know the specifics of the crash, but I don't know if every crash is the same...you highside, low side, hit things, get run over...

I tripped in my parents house the night before a race and broke my foot.  Raced with a broken foot.

Have you seen a sports doctor?

Have you sought a second opinion?

At times, I feel that there are some in the medical community that front on things without much knowledge about them.

What would cause this to happen again?  Falling down stairs?  Auto accident?  Your kids, or someone elses, blindside you while playing football?  Work injury?

I don't think anyone lives in a glass box so...

Regardless, you've been a nice addition to the local racing scenery.  Stay involved if you decide that you're not going to be on track.

I don't know if this is the same or not but Stumpy tore his labrum in his shoulder (on the dirtbike of course) in 2002 about halfway through the year.  Physical therapy did nothing so of course they wanted to whip out the scalpel and carve away at him.  He said no, and hit the gym hard and really built up his shoulder muscles.  It's not even a blip on the radar now.

Something to think about, I guess.

Dave, I don't think you should race.  Instead, you should just show up and be my pit b1tch...  Oh yeah, bring your checkbook too.   8) ;D

on the flip side, I tore my labrum (unknown at the time according to the quacks that read the mri) in a crash going into turn 7 at BHF in 2002 may.
The doc told me I was fine and all I needed was physical therapy.
A year later I had my strength back but was in terible pain. My shoulder would start throbbing with sharp pains and getting worse everyday.

Flew out to see Dr. Ting. He told me I had complications because the labrum was not operated on. I had a fluid build up that formed a cyst. He fixed me up and I am all good... Had to go through another round of physical therapy too which sucked.
Strength wise I am all good.

So maybe get a second opinion. Get a good doctor too. Do some research to find out who is the best in your area.

Me too Davey....your little buddy! ROC 1994 practice highside crushed heal & fractured ankle. I was told that I`d need surgery or I would never walk without pain again. Came home and got two opinions and was told if I had surgery I`d never walk without pain again! Go figure! I let mine heal on it`s own. I had to switch to standard shifting and I know when it`s gonna rain but I`m usually good. I could give you a similiar boring story about my right shoulder but you get the idea. Shit happens, do ya wanna ride or not?! ;D

Highsided, severly broken Collar Bone, on top of right Lung etc., had plate installed, the end of plate poked up at the end, not good with Leathers, had plate taken out.
End of Collar bone was shattered, Dr. had to cut off the end of Collar Bone, when he went in to saw it off, he had to cut through Ligaments and Muscle, that was in 2002, after many PT sessions it's back to about 60% and a constant 24-7 burning.
Dr. said no more Racing.
I raced with Plate in and finished 4th. in Points in Am. Super Twins {Florida Region} became inspired when I found out that only the top 3 was what counted.
Last year Raced with the Plate out and won Am. Super Twins Championship, {my greatest acheivment}
Totaly motivated by these things, Raced through it and achieved a goal,no better feeling.
Hope you don't need the Surgery, don't let them mess with the Ligaments.
Out this year with broken Ribs from last year, can't tuck in.
