Six days from now, six miles from a very large body of water...

Mr. Weatherman doesn't have a CLUE what will be happening there next Sunday!

BTW, Gingerman is a Suzuki and Yamaha Contingency weekend, so expect to see quite a few of the "non-local" fast guys there...

Oh believe me I know, thus the "as of right now" statement.  I am just hoping it does change!

See you there Scott.

LOL, right...

"If rain were the great equalizer, I'd stil win, it just wouldn't be by as much..."  a wise racer once told me.

But it sometimes allows for a poor set up to work and risks to be re-evaluated.

Good luck, guys...

I'm confused....

Why then when it rains does it allow Paul to run (and beat) guys like Lacey and Key?  Hell, he even gave Jessie Janish a run for his money at Gingerman.

Why, when it rains, does the Suzuki's in MotoGP run near the front?

A very, very, wise racer once told me (yellow bike, used to have the #5 on it) that Paul's size and weight was an advantage in the rain.

If it was because Paul was running a poor set up.....  Just remember who it was that suggested the settings.   ;)

The way I see it.. atleast for me is that rain riding don't prove a damn thing. My very first race ever was in the rain. I bogged the start as usual, went into turn 1 dead last by a mile. Ended up finishing second by half a bike length. I wasn't even close to getting a second the rest of the season in the dry. What does that tell me? Nothing except that I'm a crap ass rider and I was willing to risk falling down a bit more than the rest of the guys in my race.

QuoteNothing except that I'm a crap ass rider and I was willing to risk falling down a bit more than the rest of the guys in my race.

Well, you may see it that way....

Personally, I believe that Paul, Don Cook, and others are good riders in the rain and the dry.  Although, when dealing with weight and horsepower differences, the rain equals these things out.  Since you have to be really smoooth in the rain with your braking, turning, and throttle control....   I believe the rain will showcase a rider more than the machine he's riding.

My $0.02

I doubt there is a direct correlation between rain results and rider ability in dry conditions.

If a rider who is crazy fast in dry conditions because he can late brake, slide the front, and spin the rear crashes in T1 in the wet doing the same thing, does that mean he really sucks as a rider?

Conversely, if a rider is incredibly smooth and flowing in the dry and finishes 10th, but in the rain finishes 2nd, does that mean he's really awesome but the dry track is hiding his real talent?

My point is I think riding in the wet may not be the "great equalizer" but the great "it's now a different race".

QuoteI believe the rain will showcase a rider more than the machine he's riding.

Interesting.

However, rain changes the traction that is available.  Those issues can of benefit to certain set ups that are not as good as they could be in the dry.   We could go through long lists of variables that we could take into account.

Chassis geometry can change because of the different heights and contours of rain tires.  Dampening qualities can be different because of different carcass designs.  Spring rates?

I hate the rain, but one of my best AMA results was at Laguna on a 600 in the 750 race in the rain.  Wasn't because my bike was better, but because certain things in the chassis allowed me to have better traction (well, not good...we weren't allowed rain tires years ago in Supersport) than others.  I was hooking up and doing ok where others struggled.  There were certain things in my chassis that I recognized later that did not make it optimum for high traction situations necessarily.

Set ups change.  Unless you're chasing it a bit, it can be stagnate.  Based on rider feedback, poor or good, you get what you have.  The trick is to recognize what feel is all about and to make decisions based on that.

QuoteMy point is I think riding in the wet may not be the "great equalizer" but the great "it's now a different race".

I would agree with that comment (despite calling rain an equalizer in the past).

I would also agree that setups do change in the rain from the dry.  Some people understand this and can take advantage of it better than others.  This often is coupled with added confidence and the 'feeling' that a person can win.  Likewise, there are FAST dry people who simply hate the rain, and their riding shows it...

Ya ever play that game when you were a kid where everyone sits in a circle and the first person whispers something to their neighbor and they pass it around and when it gets back it's totally different?

Thats what we did here, started out talking about Gingerman ended up talking about racing in the rain!

Anyway, Sunny and 82 Saturday and Sunday.

Hey guys,
I'm planning on coming to race Gingerman for the first time this Sunday.  I'll be on an SV650.  I may come on Saturday and practice, but it depends on if I can talk one of my street/sport buddies to come with me.  He has a street SV.  I bought a CCS license.  He does not have one.  I understand the machine reqt's, safety wire, leathers, etc.

Question:  Can he expect to show up with me on Saturday morning with his cash and be able to ride without a problem?

I'm pretty excited to ride myself this weekend.  But now that I hear it's a Suzuki weekend...   I'm a little intimidated.  That might be a tough way to run my first race there!  Oh well.

If he does not have a license and has not taken a school that is recognized by CCS for obtaining a license, he will not be allow to ride. If he's a former racer, they have a different criteria for that, but he will need to contact CCS about the requirments to obtain credentials.

Alexa, I think he meant ride on the trackday on Saturday.  If so, then as long as there is an open spot, I think he will be allowed to pay right then.

Or he could take the race school instead and race on Sunday! :)

You have to have a license to ride in the street group?!

r1owner,
Thanks.  That's how I interpretted the rules.  I was worried for a second!  I was thinking that he could buy the SRD (?) membership Saturday morning and just ride Saturday.  I have a full CCS license because I had a WERA license last year.  I'd love for him to race on Sunday, but I don't think he will want to try to take the race license school, if it's even offered.  The bike is fully wired now, we were up half the night last night, but I don't think he has the confidence yet, and he just wants to do a couple track days riding in the street or sport group before he thinks about racing.

Hey Spyderchick, let me know if you disagree, I don't want to pack up and drive all the way there and be turned away.

And to all -- I'll be on a copper colored SV #688, yellow leathers.  Come by and say hi!

No, my bad, I thought he wanted to race, but obviously he intends to do the trackday. I've seen too many guys show up just hoping to "race" and then get POed cuz you need to take the school. It's all good, he'll ride the street group, have a great time, and then he'll be hooked and do the school. Natural progression, you know.  ;D

Of course.  In fact, I just felt the headshake out of T6 on the rough patch, and the last 2 laps I drifted just a touch wide through 8 and hit that dip...

But my times are coming down.

Hopefully my Ralph Lauren sliders will last through the day.

Why do people always have to point out the bumps/ripples?

I swear... Till someone points them out, I don't notice or care that they are there!
The minute I hear someone talking about a bump... I get fixated on it  :-/

I came in about 1/2 way through the day and made some suspension changes which helped that strech of pavement out.  Got down into the 27's pretty comfortably.

Ralph Lauren sliders were gone by lunch.

I ran that track 4 years ago. Put in about a total of 20 laps. After racing there again yesterday, I'd swear I've never ever been on this track before. Why is that? Anyway, ran some low 34's. Had some good battles, took home some wood and didn't crash.

Hope I remember how the track goes in Oct. ;D

(Divet in turn 1 was still there. Plus a few more.)

Same here Kevin... I'm glad I did the track day on Saturday afternoon. I also took home some wood, took a 1st in LW F-40, "didn't crash" and had some awsome battles. Low points were the 2 1/2 hr "quiet time" and the combo of LW SS and Thunderbike together. It totally torques me out that I had to pay for two classes and race one race. And I had to be gridded in the Thunderbike class in the back grid position. It really affected alot of racers that run both classes. But at least everything came home in one piece.

And I had that goose egg on my elbow taken care of today. Turned out to be a rather large blood clot. the Doc fixed me right up. See you all at Barber?
