Title: ASMA a Winner
Post by: rotoboge on May 16, 2005, 10:04:09 AM
Thanks to Roger for a great weekend of racing at Arroyo Seco this weekend. Unfortunately, alot of experts did not show, but they are the ones that missed out... The locals are to be respected on this technical track and they give you a run for your money!

Thanks Roger! ;)

It was a great weekend, other than that freak, short-lived rainstorm that blew through late Sunday evening.  The 1/4" hail sucked, especially while changing wheels.  It did give Elaine a chance to try out her rains she bought back at Firebird.  It was really cool to watch her and Tom Savoca explore the limits of the rain tires, both for their first time on rains.

It was cool that Larry Denning came out to try and earn some Suzuki money.  It was even cooler that the local guys didn't give him a single win.

It was too bad that most of the expert girds were pretty small, but the amatuer grids were pretty big.  And my classes (LWSB, LWGP, and Modern Vintage) had the biggest grids yet this year.

Was hoping to see more of the southwest guys out, but it sure didn't hurt my points ;D

Elaine rode one hell of a race in the rain! I was leaving the parking lot, but stayed to watch her and T. Savoca on the fast right-hander... Great Show! :o

Kudos to her!

Thanks!  The rain race was a blast!  I was using the race as practice for rains, as I had never been on the tires before.  The Michelin rains worked great!

I had so much fun dicing with Tom out there.  At one point I was going through the sweeper, and out of the corner of my eye I could see EVERYONE in the pits watching our race.  They were probably waiting for someone to go down.  But it was so much fun, especially racing in front of a crowd.  He was in Formula 40 and I was in Formula Femme, so we weren't going to do anything stupid, but were still going to have some fun and race.  We were flying through the puddles, and I just remember the spray off of his rear tire hitting me in the neck.  But boy is his bike fast on the straights!  My poor little 600 couldn't keep up.  Good thing I'm good on the brakes and in the corners.  ;)

After the race we came rolling into the pits and I was just laughing from all the fun, and everyone was clapping and cheering.  Afterwards Kane Lasky came up and said "That was just like watching MotoGP!"  I took that as a compliment.  :D

Yeah...where WAS everyone?!  Oh well, I'll gladly take the points!

It was a great weekend of fun.  Lots of good races.  Lots of crashes too.   :o  I think it was because people were trying to go fast without figuring the track out.  That track will bite ya.

And for those that thought they learned something about Arroyo Seco this month, it won't matter for the October races because we'll be going COUNTER CLOCKWISE!!!  Best start planning for track days out there.   ;D

Hey, Zac, it appears those Hymer boyz were too skeered of us on the little MZ.  They didn't even show their faces in NM for the team challenge.  And they probably didn't want to be lapped by me in Lightweight Superbike.   ;D

Actually, Larry did win one race, Unlimited Supersport I think. He did really well for his first visit to Arroyo.

All in all it was a really good weekend, and thankfully I get today off :) Tomorrow I'll be working on getting the points and results posted.

Great job by Elaine both in the rain and especially in the dry for giving Ted Rich such a great race. I think that's possibly the best I've seen her battle.

Thanks!   :D  Ted and Steve Fukiage usually run away from me in the LWSB CCS races at the other tracks.  So that shows how much local knowledge at Arroyo Seco buys ya!

I agree, she gets the "best performance" award ;)

Oops, my bad.  That must have been the race that Kane crashed in.

I actually lost a little concentration in the LWSB race because I kept looking to see if Elaine or Ted was in front.  Then Kirk came by me (Grr).

Did anyone notice that's a brand new RS Kirk was riding?  He rips on that little bike, especially considering the altitude takes most of the horsepower that 125 makes. It's funny watching him and Zac because you can barely see Kirk when they're tucked in down the back straight. I mean, there's only so much tuck you can get on a CR500!

Yep, Roger always gets the results on the ASMA website and points updated pretty quickly.  Considering that it's him and Michelle that do it, and all of the other track stuff they have to do (drag races, car races, track rentals, track maintenance), as well as working their regular jobs, it's pretty amazing.

Photos from the ASMA/CCS SW race weekend are posted on Andy Ruhl's gallery:  http://foghorn.homeunix.net:8081/~photos/gallery/

There are over 1000 pics on there, organized by pit photos, amateur racers, and expert racers.

Andy Ruhl took a whole bunch of pics during the Sunday morning practice sessions.  You can check them out at http://foghorn.homeunix.net:8081/~photos/gallery/albums.php

Will these be ASMA points and/or points that qualified towards CCS?

I do the ASMA points, Linda gets to do the CCS points  ;D. I'm sure they're working on them also.

Any idea as to "when"?

Roger, if you race East in two weeks, I'll cover your
race fees... Love to have you out there! ;)

Knowing Roger's opinion of East, I think you'll have to try harder than that.

It's not that I hate the track, it's just that I have missed the race at Main for the past few years because of conflicts with things we've been running here (usually drag races). I really wanted to make it this year and left our schedule open that weekend so I could go.

Well, there's still the Main race in Sept.

Hey, take this weekend off and get some much needed relaxation!   :)

I'll see if I can get my other motor fixed before I make a decision. Right now I've got a bone stock 99 R6 motor in and I'd get smoked 2 bikelengths out of every corner. I can get away with it on my track because I'm very dialed into it, and I could possibly get away with it on Main because it has enough corners to make up time on, but East doesn't have enough corners to make up time on because they all lead to a power sapping straight. I'll still come out but not sure if I'll race or not. Thanks for the offer Tom.

I have an extra bike that should have enough power to keep up with the 600s. It's also not a virgin anymore.

Great... I also have the GSXR 600FX bike ready to go too (127hp). Take your pick Roger, or ride both!

UHHHHH, NO!!  Unfortunately, my kids had a conflicting pocketbike/mini motard race weekend here in Phoenix.  They had a blast!! :D

But LUCKY YOU!!  We have a race right here in Phoenix in a couple of weeks, and you two get to show Steven and me just how fast you guys are!!  My race lineup is GTL, LWSB, LWSS, LWF40, and Thunderbike.  I'm sure we will be seeing each on the track a few times!   8)

I MAY use an EX500and run ULWSB, but it's only stock, so Elaine should spank me, but maybe I can have fun with Ed.  He always looks so lonely out there!!   :-/

As far as our little wager goes, we still have the October race, so don't brag too much!  ;)

If you two want to make an interesting wager for the June 5th weekend, let me know.  But maybe you are SKEEEERED!!!   There are lots of yummy restaurants close to the track!!   :P

Oh, did I tell you two how much we miss you??   ;D

Come on Ray, how about LWGP?  ;D  LWSB I have to ride my pathetic little dirtbike, in LWGP I get to ride the REAL racebike.

And I won't be in GTL, because the BIG SV650s must be skeered of my tiny little itty bitty 250 and they make me run with the mean nasty middleweight bikes in GTU.

We've missed you too Ray  :-*

Zac, I'll see how I am riding on Saturday.  If I am fast and Zoomy, I'll go ahead and enter LWGP.  You two better watch out! I am DOWN to 273 today!    :o
Steven looks a little fatter lately, though (as if that can even be imagined!)   ;D

Roger's without internet right now, but yeah, Mike's done quite a few CCS races in the past and knows other tracks.  He's even done a few AMA races.  Not sure if he'll be at East though.

Shreve..... He's done one or two races at East, plus Vegas, Streets of Willow he did pretty good. He also is the current #1 plate holder and took 4 or 5 expert championships at SMRI last year. I seriously doubt he'll be at East because he's based out of Albquerque and runs ASMA and SMRI and he's trying to save up for a new bike. He definitely knows more than one track, although he knows this one best.
