Title: What sproket ratios to run at Gingerman this weekend on the SV and braking for c
Post by: SV88 on October 06, 2006, 12:45:53 PM
This is an interesting debate:  One racer is telling me to run 14-47 and the other notable racer (both of which shall remain unamed) tells me that I won't even pull 100 mph @ GGN with the 14-47 gearing.  The bike is set up now with 15-47 which is pretty close to the 14-46 that Ed Key and Guy run...
Help --- which one is right?  Is this a big deal anyway for a slow newbie like me???

Another question:  should I be down shifting as aggressively as I've been doing?  Are the SVs prone to spinning crank bearings... I think Guy brakes hard and downshifts repeatedly without letting out the clutch.  I brake and blip the throttle, bang down a gear, ease out the clutch (rapidly and repeat).  Is this the best way of slowing down for a corner?

What's GGN?

15/47 is 3.13.  14/46 is 3.28.

Ed's bike is lighter and more powerful than yours, we can decide that immediately.  Ed would probably say that you can't pull his gearing.  I'd do 14/47 if your info on Ed is reasonably correct.

Big deal?  Yeah, the bike will pull better.  You might save upshifts.  You might not need to shift mid corner.  The chassis will be more sable under acceleration coming out of a corner properly geared vs over reving in one gear or under reving in another.

I let out the clutch on each down shift to ensure that I actually got the down shift.  The brake is really the only thing you should be using to slow down for the corner.  Over reving is bad regardless.  Does that make sense?

Actully Ed, Guy, Paul Onley and I got into a good discussion - Ed and Guy run BHF gearing because it's less hassle to leave it alone and they don't want to change the geometry of their bikes.  Paul wanted me to run 14-47 which I thought would be too tall - he's running 14-46.  I did use a bit of six gear on the back straight with my 14-47 gearing.  GGN - Gingerman.  I did struggle this weekend with a best of 1:40:54.  Two of my races were in the 1:43-44 and one was 1:41 area.  The bike felt pretty solid at GGN even with the bumpy surface.  Guess I'm still trying to get over my rain fall b4 T6 at BHF the previous weekend.
