Title: Triumph Thruxton???
Post by: Calkins on April 03, 2017, 02:16:22 PM
While looking over the new rulebook, I and a thought...  Has anyone ran a Triumph Thruxton or Bonneville?  It appears to fit into Ultra-Light SuperBike (900cc air cooled non-desmo twin).  I have owned similar bikes for quite a few years, and love them.  I am familiar with them, and have sourced out most of the vendors for parts over the years.  I would probably buy another one of these bikes instead of running my 600.  I would think that a AHRMA/WERA Thruxton Cup bike should fit the bill nicely.

It should fit under Thunderbike rules too. I had a 2005 that I bought new and put about 50K miles in 2 years on it. I absolutely loved that bike besides all the electrical crap with it.Ive thought several times about getting another for shits and giggles to run it in t-bike,because lifes short so why not. Not sure what the new displacement does as far as class now though. They are top-heavy pigs for the power they put out,but can be made to handle alright.I ended up raising the forks tubes 3/4" throught the triples, but left the rear height alone. Actually thats the bike I highsided and spent a few days in a hospital bed with new titanium hardware in my right arm,and knocked me cross-eyed for a day.....seriously. Either way....have fun and good luck

The new Bonnies are liquid cooled 900cc with a single throttle body and 1200cc with twin throttle bodies.  Size and weight are said to be similar to the air cooled 790cc and 865cc bikes.

Also, the reason I ask about the modern air cooled Triumph twins, is I am not "into" my liquid cooled 600cc four banger.  I do not like the powerband.  I love to beat on my Triumph twin cruiser.  Love the sound.  Love the torque.  And I love that I do not have to kill it to find the power.  I often find myself shifting my Speed Four like my Bonneville America, which is just before the power comes in on the 600.  I am sure on the track would be totally different, but the quad is just not me.  I love my twins.

It should fit under Thunderbike rules too.

I just checked, Thunderbike does not have a listing for aircooled, four valve, OHC...

Oh I hear ya. I went from the thruxton to an FZR400.......major engine differences needless to say. All rev and little power   The 865 would just grunt out of whatever.Quite the learning curve figuring out how to keep the little 400 on the boil

Sorry, I see now too. I thought it was a direct fit. Better email K.Elliot for permission then. Its not like its going to be a darkhorse,so should be easy to get the blessing

Oh yeah....I forgot about the 5 speed handicap too :ahhh: Its been a few years since I had mine. At daytona the thruxton would have a seriously hard time keeping up,but smaller local tracks would be good/fun in my opinion. Keep us posted if you get approval on anything other than ULSBK. :thumb:

I emailed Eric Kelcher earlier about Thunderbike.  I will report back.

So what year is yours? I see you have a muffler on the left side,so assuming you still have a 2-2 exhaust? I had the original D&D 2-1,not the newer system that runs the exhaust right into the rear tire :wtf:  Ive been window shopping for about 3 years now to find another 04-06,but they always want close to dealer price for any that I find,if I do find any.Not sure if i'll ever really take the plunge on another.....but if the right deal comes along.....we do what we do

I haven't gotten a Thruxton yet.  I had a 2005 Speedmaster (cruiser) and current have a 2007 Bonneville America (cruiser).  Last summer I bought 2006 Speed Four (599cc liquid four) that I was going to use for track days.  I really want a 2004 Daytona 600.  ValMoto in England took three riders to the Isle Of Man in 2003.  Each rider ran a Daytona 600 is the Junior TT and the Production 600 classes.  All three riders finished in the top ten in both races, won the Junior TT, and gave Triumph the Manufacturers Championship.  I want to build one for Amateur Middleweight Supersport.  But, I have been wanting to build a Thruxton since I bought my Speedmaster back in 2009.

Ah gotcha,I thought that pic was you. I like the daytona 600s too......would something fun and out of the standard for the races. Not sure how competetive it would be,be im sure good fun just because its never seen anymore. My old man was a triumph guy,and infected me a bit too. Yep,I remember seeing some of the TT when they were there. That was seriously cool.

I just raced a Thruxton at AHRMA event in Kershaw last weekend.  First time on the bike and at that track racing.   Set up correctly, it's a fun bike to ride fast.  Is IT all that fast?  No.    Best lap times were 1:56s and I led majority of both races that weekend riding a bit reserved since I was on unfamiliar bike and track.   Took 2nd on the tail of the winner both times.    I also ran SOT3 and finished near the bottom in both races, but not dead last by any means.

It's one of those bikes that isn't supposed to be all THAT fast, but if ridden well can hold it's own.
